About the OfS
We are the independent regulator of higher education in England.
Our regulation sets minimum requirements for the quality of English higher education. They enable us to intervene where higher education courses fall below our expectations and help us to ensure that all students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have meaningful choices of high-quality courses and are effectively supported to succeed.
The role
We are seeking experienced academics from a wide range of higher education providers to help us to assess the quality and standards of higher education courses.
In this recruitment round, we are particularly interested in hearing from applicants who:
- Are interested in the lead assessor role.
- Lead assessors have a key role in leading our assessment teams and preparing the assessment report.
- Have experience of delivering higher education in further education providers, or smaller providers.
- Have experience relevant for degree awarding power assessments such as: academic governance experience; substantial external examiner or validation experience; or teaching and learning committee experience.
- We are particularly interested in candidates who have senior leadership experience in those roles and have led on the design and management of academic governance.
We are also particularly interested in hearing from applicants who have academic expertise in:
- Cultural studies,
- modern foreign languages,
- Asian cultural studies, or Chinese language
- Engineering
- Law
- Fashion
You will join our pool of expert academic assessors. For each assessment, we will select assessors from the pool, based on their specific expertise, availability, and the type of assessment required. You will work in a small team, led by a lead assessor, and we are seeking both Assessors and Lead Assessors.
We are looking for experienced academics who will challenge established norms where these are not delivering a high-quality academic experience for students. We are seeking academics who can reach and explain robust and defensible academic judgements, focusing on the learning, teaching and assessment provided for students, rather than the processes that the provider follows to deliver those things.
About you
You will be an experienced academic, with experience in designing and delivering learning, teaching and assessment in higher education. You will be currently or recently employed by a higher education provider as academic staff.
We will expect you to be qualified to doctoral level where that is the norm for academic staff working in the particular areas in which you have expertise. In any event, we will expect you to have expertise that is equivalent to a doctoral-level qualification if you do not hold a qualification itself.
Application process
Closing date for applications is 11.55pm Monday 12th February 2024
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an online assessment centre in early March 2024. There will be a subsequent interview round for the lead assessor role.
