Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role at the centre of our Strategy team, supporting the development of the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) strategic capability.
Join our Strategy, Communications and Advocacy Directorate and help implement a clear strategy that maximises the impact of our work to support people, businesses and the UK economy.
About the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)
We help people, businesses, and the UK economy by promoting competitive markets and tackling unfair behaviour. Our work is wide ranging, ambitious and often new and challenging.
The Strategy, Communications and Advocacy Directorate ensures that the CMA’s work is underpinned by a clear strategy, impactful messaging and effective external engagement.
Our Strategy team is responsible for informing, developing and delivering the CMA’s strategy, working across the organisation and drawing on a wide range of expertise and tools.
The role
As an Assistant Director, Strategy, you will help develop organisation-wide strategic direction and planning by conducting analysis of emerging trends and issues, that will ensure evidence-based decision making. You will also research, advise on and implement new tools and systems to automate and fine-tune this process, gathering data-driven insights and identifying key parameters affecting our strategic decision making.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Advising senior leadership on strategic direction
Leading and managing strategic initiatives and programmes
Developing analytical and data-driven insights and plans
Developing, benchmarking, monitoring, and reporting on information and assessment frameworks
Driving digital transformation within the function, dovetailing with wider organisational initiatives
Overseeing a team who are responsible for research, data, and strategic analysis
Managing the prioritisation and allocation of tasks within the Strategy and Insights team
About you
We are looking for an astute, resourceful and forward-thinking individual, with a problem-solving mindset and the ability to leverage software and analytics to help shape strategy.
You will need a graduate degree in either economics, public policy, data science, business strategy, or a related field; and/or significant experience of strategy and/or consulting experience.
Strong research and analytical skills are essential, along with experience of using futures techniques, tools and cross-organisational horizon-scanning.
You will be able to manage complex projects and lead cross-functional teams and can provide experience of successfully delivering organisational change and/or digital transformation projects.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, along with an ability to distil complex concepts is also essential.
What we can offer you
The CMA is a hugely diverse, rewarding and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so while also having considerable flexibility when it comes to how and when you work. We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme with an average employer contribution of 27%, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme.

Closing date for applications: 11:55pm, Monday 26th February 2024.
Like many other organisations, we operate a hybrid working model with a mix of office and home working. We believe this supports us to deliver our best work while allowing the flexibility to maintain balanced and healthy lives.
The CMA are an accredited Disability Confident Employer, and we are an equal opportunities employer, welcoming suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds. We recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles.
