Assistant Legal Adviser - Legacy Support Unit

Job Background:

The Assistant Legal AdviserLegacy Support Unit (LSU) will be part of a large team working on Legacy Inquests within the Lord Chief Justice's five-year plan and all related Legacy Litigation. The role will include representing the organisation at hearings and providing legal advice to both officers and staff on all legacy matters being dealt with by LSU.

Hours of Work: Monday – Friday 37 hours per week (42 hours gross)

Salary: £40,300 - £43,191 plus environmental allowance (under review)

Location: Greater Belfast

Main Activities:

  • The main duties and responsibilities associated with the role include the following:
  • Dealing with Legacy Inquests and Legacy Inquest related civil litigation.
  • Providing legal advice and briefings to Police Officers and Police Staff on complex legal issues; ongoing inquests/cases and legacy issues impacting upon the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
  • Supporting the Senior Legal Advisers LSU in relation to PSNI's role in the Lord Chief Justices five-year Legacy Inquest Plan.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders through using effective interpersonal skills.
  • Assisting Senior Legal Advisers LSU in provision of training within LSU and to others.
  • Assisting Senior Legal Advisers LSU in the formulation of reports as required.
  • Undertaking own casework.
  • Maintaining accurate records.
  • Represent the organisation and attend hearings, meetings both internal and external, at all court levels and other forums as requested.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • A Law degree and be qualified as a barrister or solicitor and capable of becoming entitled to practice in Northern Ireland by the date of appointment.

Essential Skills and Experience

Two years post qualification experience must include:

  • Managing litigation and inquest cases within the Northern Ireland Court system.
  • Knowledge of legacy issues impacting upon the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
  • Providing comprehensive legal advice relating to legislation and legal practices in Northern Ireland on complex legal issues.

Essential Other

  • Applicants must have a valid driving licence and a car available for official business use, or access to a form of personal transport that will enable you to meet the requirements of the post in full.
  • IT literate specifically in the use of the Microsoft Office suite (including MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Outlook).

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Experience of providing legal advice within the public sector.
  • Experience of providing legal advice within a sensitive operating environment.
