Job description

Your Impact:

Jacobs, we'll inspire and empower you to deliver your best work so you can evolve, grow and succeed – today and into tomorrow. With more than 55,000 people in 40 countries, working at Jacobs offers an exciting range of opportunities to develop your career within a supportive and diverse team who always strive to do the right thing for our people, clients and communities.

People are Jacobs’ greatest asset, and we offer a competitive package to retain and attract the best talent.
In addition to the benefits you’d expect, UK employees also receive free single medical cover and digital GP service, family-friendly benefits such as enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes, plus reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships. We also give back to our communities through our Collectively program which incorporates matched-funding, paid volunteering time and charitable donations.

Work-life balance and flexibility is a key focus area for Jacobs. We’re happy to discuss hybrid, part-time and flexible working hours, patterns and locations to suit you and our business.

About the opportunity:

Jacobs is a market leader in the transportation sector and some of our largest clients include National Highways, Transport Scotland, the Welsh Government and global contractors. Internationally, we work on some of the world’s mega projects, for example, NEOM The Line and the King Khalid International Airport. Closer to home, we work for the councils and transport authorities in our largest towns and cities, providing you with the chance of being able to work on a project in your local community. In the North, we are delivering schemes for Manchester Airport Group, United Utilities, Cheshire East Council, and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Whilst in the Midlands and South-West, we are working on frameworks for Worcestershire County Council, Birmingham City Council, Derbyshire County Council and West of England Combined Authority.

We are now looking for a number of experienced highways design and discipline leads at Principal Engineer and Associate Director level to join our growing hub locations around the UK.

As an experienced member of the team, you will support with both project delivery and the technical mentoring of our talent.

Your responsibilities:

  • Proactively driving technical excellence and safety in design within team deliverables.
  • Championing opportunities for automation and process efficiencies in everything we do.
  • On projects, lead and mentor a small team of designers.
  • Generate bottom-up forecasts of project hours for your team or discipline by project. Understand the importance of escalating any scope changes and the impact on delivery.
  • Coordinate the delivery of Civils highways design solutions to programme and budget.
  • Collaborate with discipline leads globally to provide an integrated and best practice service to our clients and be empowered to challenge today so that we can re-invent tomorrow.
  • Line Management. You do not need to line manage to progress at Jacobs. You can pursue our Technologist Career Path and work towards becoming a subject matter expert. However, if People Leadership is of interest, there may be the option to supervise other staff locally and become a valued part of one of our family trees.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Experience in managing engineering design solutions in transportation.
  • Open and inclusive mind set.
  • Technical experience of delivering local and/or major highways projects or the land side alignment elements in adjacent markets such as Water or Aviation.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to communicate different design options to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead small project teams effectively and support their technical development.
  • Thorough understanding of commonly used design standards such as DMRB or international equivalents.
  • Sound knowledge of UK H&S legislation and a passion for fostering safety and wellbeing.
  • Capable of managing a workload which may be subject to change at short notice
  • Ability to work independently and effectively within a global multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience of the financial management and control of projects.
  • Attained a relevant professional qualification, for example a degree in engineering /CEng/ IEng or equivalent qualifications or work experience.
