About us In 2019 UCL founded the SPRC to support the study of racism and racialisation and their impacts on science, metaphysics and culture. The SPRC’s remit is to coordinate, deepen and promote UCL’s work on these questions in active engagement and exchange with multi-disciplinary debates. With Professor Paul Gilroy as the Inaugural Director, the SPRC has flourished, despite starting out in pandemic conditions, and is now established as an internationally renowned reference point in the critical study of race. The MA in Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies is currently in its third cohort of students (c. 15-20 p.a.). The SPRC sits within UCL's Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS). About the role We are now looking to recruit a new Director to build on the outstanding achievements to date and to consolidate the position of the SPRC as a major centre of excellence. The appointee will be working within the fields of critical race studies, race theory, histories/representations of racialised thinking and racism, and/or their social practices, impacts and effects. They will have a proven track record in the critical study of race, manifest through ambitious, world-leading scholarship, influential publications, succe! ss in est ablishing and leading significant research projects and teams as well as experience in applying for and gaining funding in related areas of study. The Director will be responsible for the strategic direction of the SPRC and for ensuring its financial sustainability, through a combination of postgraduate teaching, external research funding and/or philanthropic support. The Director will also lead the day-to-day operation of the Centre, including management of two permanent academic members of staff, an administrator, postdoctoral fellows and visiting fellows. They will oversee and help to deliver the taught Masters programme (Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies). About you The successful candidate must have a world-leading reputation in the field of the study of race and racism, and the ability to act as an effective representative for the Centre on a global stage. A strong record of scholarly work and international publications of the highest quality on areas such as the history of race as a concept and its imbrication/implication in social institutions and processes, law, education, psychic life, culture and the arts, language, employment, social policy and/or socioeconomic attainment. A dem! onstrable track record in research leadership and/or winning competitive research funds.
