Job description

Salary: £39,752 - £45,161 per annum pro-rata (£23,851 - £27,097)

The Independent Cinema Office is recruiting for a part-time Talent Executive to work on our talent activities in the South East region.

The Independent Cinema Office (ICO) is the UK’s support organisation for independent cinema. We offer film programming services to cinemas, bring films into distribution and are the main provider of events, training and advice for the independent cinema sector. We work with the main funding bodies in film exhibition, are a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.

The ICO is based in central London – however, we are a UK-wide organisation and our activities take place across the UK as well as in Europe. Our turnover is just under £2 million a year and we have 22 members of staff.

Film Hub South East

Film Hub South East is part of the British Film Institute’s Film Audience Network (BFI FAN). Supported by National Lottery funding, BFI FAN is a unique collaboration made up of eight Hubs managed by leading film organisations and venues strategically placed around the UK and is the backbone of the BFI’s strategy to ensure the greatest choice of film is available for everyone.

The Independent Cinema Office is the lead organisation for Film Hub South East. We provide resources, training and funding for film exhibition – with an emphasis on growing new audiences for British independent and international film. We deliver talent development activity for aspiring filmmakers and raise awareness of film culture in the region though our BFI NETWORK activities. We work with organisations to enable 16 to 25 year olds to learn more about the film industry, watch cultural cinema, become familiar with their local venues and develop skills as independent filmmakers, film curators or film industry new entrants though our Young Film Network.

BFI NETWORK

BFI NETWORK exists to discover and support talented writers, directors and producers at the start of their careers. We collaborate with film organisations and leading cultural venues across the UK to provide funding for short films, support for the development of first features, as well as a range of professional and creative development programmes.

In Film Hub South East our BFI NETWORKTalent Executives discover, support, develop and champion new and emerging filmmakers across the region – in the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Kent, Norfolk, Oxfordshire, Suffolk, Surrey and Sussex.

About the role

We are looking for a Talent Executive to join our existing team to work three days a week on our talent activities in the South East region. This fixed term contract is to cover the current post holder’s one-year career break until the end of June 2025.

Primarily, you will be assessing applications to the BFI NETWORK’s short film funds and working with partners to support and develop creative talent in the region. You need to have good experience of short film production, and be fully conversant with budgets, contract and copyright issues and the practicalities of production. You need to be passionate about new talent, supportive and good at outreach. You need to be a self-starter with great administration skills and an understanding of the needs of emerging talent. You might have produced your own films, or worked in production across film or television. You might also work as an independent producer or other production professional in your own right.

You must be willing to work hard and be able to juggle competing workloads, and work to deadlines.

In return, we can offer responsibility, opportunities for training and development and the chance to work with a friendly, creative team at the forefront of independent cinema exhibition and talent development in the UK. We provide access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) – a confidential information and counselling service for employees and to Occupational Health services; a dedicated HR consultant for staff support; access to a SMARTPensions scheme; annual train ticket loans; flexible working practices; flexibility around childcare hours/needs; invites to events and festivals, and other benefits.

Our offices are in London and in line with our new hybrid working policy we would expect you to come into the office two days a week, but otherwise you can work from home (you can work from the office more days if you prefer). It would be an advantage if you are familiar with the South East region and some of the organisations that support talent located there, but this is not essential.

The post would ideally be delivered three days a week, working eight-hour days (including one hour for lunch) but we are open to it being delivered across a greater number of days.

Information session

We will be holding an informal information webinar on Zoom at 10:30am on Thursday 23 May 2024 to provide more information about the position and answer any questions you may have before applying for the position.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

At the Independent Cinema Office, we are an equal opportunity employer, and we believe that a diverse workforce leads to an organisation that is more creative, innovative and gets better results. We want our workforce to represent the diversity of the people and communities in the UK and we want to see these reflected on our screens. We also want our workforce to be one where different experiences, expertise and perspectives are valued and where everyone is encouraged to grow and develop.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian, ethnically diverse, and disabled candidates as they are underrepresented within the ICO.
