SalaryThe Burn, a delightful country house events venue located on a 200-acre estate near Edzell in north-east Scotland, is an educational trust with the principal purpose of providing a residential retreat for students and academics from Scottish and other universities. It is owned by Goodenough College, a community of international postgraduate students in Bloomsbury, London, who are regular visitors to The Burn.
The Burn is currently seeking a new Chair for its oversight committee, who would also serve as a Trustee of Goodenough College and as a member of the College Board with a particular interest in Scottish affairs.
About the role:
- Challenge and assist the College leadership in the delivery of the activities of the Burn estate.
- Provide guidance on development of the estate to meet its sustainable business model objective.
- Attend quarterly Goodenough College Board meetings and chair twice-yearly Burn Committee meetings.
- Provide Scottish-specific advice to the Board and senior College team on operational management of the Burn estate.
Person specification:
- Senior strategic level and Scottish specific experience gained from sectors such as historic buildings, woodland management, higher education, income generation, Scottish government affairs, hospitality, and charity governance.
- Skills, expertise and ability to mentor and support The Burn’s senior management.
Applicants should be willing to travel at least twice annually to The Burn, near Edzell. They should also be able to travel to London for in-person meetings of the College Board, ideally four times per year (although there are facilities for remote conferencing).
The role is unremunerated but reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed and there will be the opportunity to participate in a range of enjoyable Burn activities.
