In Stockport we have big ambitions as a Council and for our Borough. Stockport is rich in history and culture. It’s vibrant and well connected with unique neighbourhoods, local villages and district centres. We’re part of Greater Manchester but we’re also lucky to have Cheshire and the Peak District on our doorstep, sharing wide open countryside and farmland.
We are an ambitious council, working as one team to create opportunities for everyone in our borough. Stockport has recently been named by the Sunday Times as the best place to live in the North West. This follows other national accolades including being named such as one of the 12 best places to retire in the UK (Which?) and one of the 12 best places to buy your first home (The Times). It comes on the back of an ambitious £1billion development and regeneration programme that is transforming the town centre and beyond.
Our recent Peer Challenge described us as an “impressive organisation” with outstanding partnerships, strong performance across key areas and robust financial management. This is alongside national leading innovation in regeneration, children’s services and digital. Local Government is facing unprecedented challenges with increased demand and financial pressures, but at Stockport we are in a strong position despite these challenges.
As Stockport’s Chief Executive, you’ll be joining us at an incredible time for Stockport, as 2024 is a landmark year for us. The next phase of our Borough plan – One Stockport - One Future Plan looks ahead 15 years and sets out the ‘5 Big Things’ that together with partners we will deliver to make Stockport a place where everyone can live happy and healthy lives. We want to build on the brilliant success we have already achieved and tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time from inequalities in our Borough to the effects of climate change.
You’ll lead from the front, acting as the principal adviser to our councillors, providing strategic leadership to our partnerships. You will also play a key role in Greater Manchester both through the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and by undertaking the Place Based Lead role for health and care, joining the senior team of NHS Greater Manchester. You will inspire our colleagues to deliver excellent, progressive services and put people at the heart of everything you do. You’ll ensure best value to deliver on our commitments to the people of Stockport and actively build relationships with the outside world to help our Borough shine.
Wherever you are now, and irrespective of sector background, you will be an experienced and confident place-based leader eager to shape public services for Stockport’s residents. You will balance an understanding of the best of Public Service and working in a political environment with commercial acumen and an appetite to spot and seize opportunities which will benefit the Borough and its communities. One Stockport – One Future is an excellent blueprint for Stockport’s future. This role presents the chance to enable us to realise those ambitions.
