Job description
About us This is an exciting opportunity to work at one of the world’s leading universities (ranked 9th in the 2024 QS World Rankings), and to help develop, and shape a new Institute. UCL’s Strategic Plan (2022-2027) includes a vision for an ambitious and distinctive ‘futures focused’ education for our students. It prompts us to look at how the future can be influenced and shaped by UCL students, staff and graduates through our teaching and research. One of the aims of the Strategic Plan is to bring together teaching, assessment and employability in order to support student futures and to that end, the new ‘Higher Education Development & Support’ (HEDS) Institute is being established. HEDS brings together UCL Arena (UCL’s Centre for Research-based Education) and UCL Careers Service, sitting within the Office of the Vice Provost (Education & Student Experience). This is a chance to work at the heart of UCL’s education endeavour, progressing UCL’s founding principles of excellence and inclusion. As a member of the HEDS Institute, you will provide sector-leading expertise in staff and curriculum development, supporting the overall student education experience. Colleagues within HEDS will support academic programme design, ensuring a high quality and inclusive education provision; they will provide responsive and collaborative pedagogical professional development and recognition; and they will lead on employability related activity both within and outside the curriculum, co-creating initiatives with students and faculties to enhance UCL’s education provision and student leadership capabilities. About the role This is an important senior education leadership role within the new HEDS Institute. As an established and credible leader of innovative education practice, the Deputy Director will ensure and promote the academic integrity of HEDS. Drawing on national and international experience, you will help the Director shape the Institute, ensuring that it fully supports the education endeavour of UCL. You will lead on strategic initiatives and take ownership of projects to enhance the quality of education and the student experience at UCL. About you Qualified to postgraduate level, and with either Senior or Principal Fellowship of Advance HE, you will have established credibility and extensive experience in leading education within your academic field and/or of Education Development in Higher Education. You will have extensive Higher Education teaching experience, including a deep understanding of the affordances and challenges of digital technologies, and a proven and sustained experience of strategic pedagogical development at a local and national level. Your written, interpersonal and intercultural communication skills will enable you to present in an engaging way to a variety of local, national and international audiences and you will be confident to use qualitative and quantitative data to demonstrate impact. In addition, your leadership skills will demonstrate how you empower staff with differing professional expertise, who are themselves experts in their own field, to establish a collaborative working and supportive team environment.
