Job description

Director of Education and Inclusion - London Borough of Newham

Are you ready to make a profound impact on the lives of children and young people? Join us at the London Borough of Newham as our Director of Education and Inclusion and lead the way to a brighter future. Newham is more than a borough; it's a culturally rich and diverse community where every child's dream and potential matter. With a diverse population, and home to over 350,000 residents, we're on a mission to provide the best opportunities for every child and young person, and their families.

Newham is not without its challenges, and we have deep rooted inequalities. A quarter of our neighbourhoods are the most deprived in the UK. After housing costs, almost half of our residents live in poverty. Despite these challenges our children achieve well comparatively. Our Director of Education and Inclusion will have a pivotal role to play in helping us address these inequalities as a leader, and also be a key champion for Children and Young People in the borough.

Children’s Services in Newham have been on an improvement journey from 2019 and in 2022 secured ‘Good’ as part of the ILACS full inspection. This journey continues with the launch in 2023 of our SEND and Inclusion Strategy developed with children and their families, and extensive input from our partners in education, health, social care and the voluntary sector. With substantial investment in our services, this strategy underscores our dedication to raise standards and ensure excellent quality and timely support for children with SEND.

Through a relational approach you will progress our ambitions for children and young people and contribute to the strategic development of Educational outcomes for children. As an experienced senior leader, you will have a track record of strategic planning, leading a dedicated team in implementing a key priority of our corporate plan - ‘Supporting our Young People’ so we give children and young people the best start in life and for Newham to be the most child friendly borough.

With leadership first and foremost, you will be an inspiring leader to our talented Education and Inclusion Service and across our partnerships, fostering a culture of continuous growth. As a strategic thinker, you will lead and collaborate with key partners to promote, educational attainment for all of our children and young people, ensuring Newham remains at the forefront of children and educations services nationally.

Join us in building a brighter future for the children and young people of the London Borough of Newham. Embark on a rewarding journey to make a lasting difference.

Job title: Director of Education and Inclusion

Salary: up to £128, 661

Terms and Conditions: Full time, Permanent

About The Role

Under the leadership of Laura Eden, Corporate Director of Children and young People’s Services (DCS), the role of Director of Education and Inclusion is an outstanding opportunity for a senior leader with a track record of leading Education services, organisations and staff. Our workforce is an incredible asset to the borough.

We are highly ambitious for Newham’s children and young people. Our fundamental purpose is to raise achievement and aspirations so that every child experiences success and is enabled to make a good start in life. A key element of our success has been the maintenance of a strong and lasting partnership between settings, schools and the local authority.

As the Director of Education and Inclusion of Newham Council, you will be expected to lead and inspire the education service and our partners through what will be a further period of significant change and challenge, both locally and nationally. Of course, should you be successful, as well as the change and challenge, you will gain enormous satisfaction and pride from the achievements of our children and young people - and the achievements of your team.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for a senior leader who will champion the highest outcomes for children, young people and the residents of Newham.
