SZC is ultimately owned by two shareholders, EDF and HMG. The shareholders hold their
investment in SZC through NNB Holdings Company (SZC) Limited. Over the course of the
current shareholding arrangements the shareholdings of the two shareholders will change.
The shareholders will fund SZC up until Financial Close through equity in line with the approved schedule
and budget. SZC’s business is to design, finance, construct, commission, operate, maintain, and eventually
decommission the nuclear power plant and related infrastructure (including activities relating to hydrogen,
direct air capture and/or desalination) at Sizewell C in Suffolk. The principal objectives of the current
development phase of the SZC project are to agree and implement the Capital Raise Plan, including
completing an equity and debt raise, agree the core supply chain contracts and obtain the regulatory permits
and licences required for the construction phase of the Project (including the core environmental permits
and nuclear site licence).
Prior to the government investment decision SZC operated as part of EDF in the Nuclear Development
business unit and was staffed by EDF colleagues and independent contractors who are now in the process
of transferring to the direct employment of SZC. It is setting itself up as an organisation capable of
delivering a new nuclear power plant, from investment case and funding, to construction, commissioning,
operations, maintenance and decommissioning.
The SZC construction programme has a technical and commercial business case predicated on technical
replication of Hinkley Point C. EDF will be an important supplier of nuclear capability for the SZC
Programme from its established nuclear business footprint in the UK.
Key stakeholders are: UK Government, relevant Government departments and agencies including Treasury
BEIS, EDF, Financial investors and institutions, Regulators, Alliance partners and local communities.
What you'll be doing
The Sizewell C (SZC) project requires an Engineering Manager lead, manage and coordinate construction
engineering for the Earthworks portion during the ECI phase and construction stages. The role is targeted at
successfully delivering the early earthworks from Spring 2024, including management of site trials for the
bulk earthworks in subsequent years. The areas of Construction Engineering focus are:
1. Methods Engineering – integrate design and construction methods through the technical lifecycle..
2. Contractor’s Design – definition and integration of the Contractor’s Temporary Works design and any
Contractor designed elements of the Permanent Works.
3. Digital Engineering - oversee the set up of digital processes, tools, systems and resource for digital
construction delivery.
4. Quality – right first time construction engineering.
- Definition of methods alongside design development, to ensure works are safe, sustainable and
- Developing technical solutions that take cognisance of the site constraints, including legal constraints
- Understand the consenting requirements and engagement with the client and external bodies where
- Definition of Temporary Works, defining requirements and managing delivery of TW designs,
- Define requirements jointly with the SZC designers for any Contractor Design of the Permanent
- Understand Lessons learnt from HPC (First of a Kind) to transfer to SZC (Next of a Kind), working
- Understand the Assurance Requirements of the highly regulated nuclear environment and
- Oversight of site construction engineering including quality, materials testing, surveying.
Who we're looking for
- Construction experience, including Temporary Works and HSQE
- Good understanding of earthworks (eg geology, materials, methods)
- Earthworks technical specifications and quality management
- Good communication skills
- Project Management skills (eg planning, scope definition)
- Good Digital skills, including use of BIM
- Good self-discipline and time management
- Problem solving skills, creative thinking.
- Teamwork
- Design management experience
- Surveying on construction sites
Essential
- Civil engineering degree or equivalent
- Experience of managing temporary works
- Experience of managing surface water and groundwater in earthworks
- Chartered or working towards chartership (next 1-2 years)
