Freelance Communications And Engagement Officer

We’re an award-winning national charity punching well above our weight to keep children safe from avoidable accidents. To achieve this, we work working closely with our local and national partners and networks.

In this established role, you’ll help us deliver our activities, including local pilot projects designed to explore new ways of working and capture good practice.

You’ll be comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders, managing and developing relationships with frontline staff, health visitors and clinicians, managers in early years, family support and public health, and contacts in national charities and professional membership associations.

You’ll be determined to deliver results, with the patience and persistence needed for effective follow-ups, while also being flexible and empathetic to the challenges our stakeholders face. This will include exploring practical workarounds so we can still deliver agreed project outcomes in the light of changing circumstances.

Alongside this, you’ll ensure we’re collecting the data we need to learn from our work, monitor our impact and report to our funders. This will include designing short surveys, collating and analysing data, collecting testimonials, case studies and photos, capturing successes and challenges, and writing short reports.

You’ll also write content for our stakeholders’ channels, helping to promote our projects and resources, and attending steering group and project meetings as needed. This will include writing articles for newsletters, blogs and magazines.

To do this successfully, you’ll need excellent communication and relationship-building skills, and will bring a proactive approach to your work. You’ll also be comfortable working at pace and navigating uncertainty.

You will share our commitment to child safety and to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Ours is a very collaborative culture, so you will participate in our weekly team meetings, join our annual meeting with Trustees and contribute to project plans and funding bids.

We work remotely, so this role can be based anywhere in the UK. Hours and working pattern are flexible depending on our projects and activities – the previous postholder worked between 6 and 15 hours a week – with time off for holidays at mutual agreement.

Person specification

• A commitment to child accident prevention.
• Confident influencing external stakeholders, able to demonstrate persistence, explore workarounds and negotiate successfully.
• Compelling communication skills, verbally and in writing across a range of channels.
• Good logistical skills, organised and with experience managing projects to deliver clear outcomes.
• Confident handling data and securing feedback, with excellent attention to detail.
• Experience of working collaboratively, while also able to work autonomously.
• Experience of working in a fast-moving organisation.
