Position: Head of Upper Senior School (Grades 9-12) of Sedbergh School Fuzhou (‘SSF’)
Supervises: Senior School Assistant Head, Parent Communication Officer and a selection of academic department leaders in agreement with the Principal
Reports to: International Principal of SSF (‘the Principal’)
The position requires a creative and determined leader with a passion for the upper age range and a good track record with IGCSE and A-level education. The successful candidate will exhibit an abundance of cultural adaptability, curiosity and a real belief in providing a British education in a Chinese bilingual school setting. He or she will have experience in China or be able to demonstrate the flexibility and openness of mind that a role of this complexity demands. Experience of UK boarding would also be helpful. The role would suit an existing section head or similar, or a leader with the potential to step up to a new level of responsibility.

2. Main responsibilities:
• Actively prepare students for success in life and university abroad through a broad and balanced holistic education;
• Participate in school planning and decision making consistent with the school’s five ‘Core Developments’ (Moral, Intellectual, Physical, Social, Aesthetic);
• Be responsible for the administration and supervision of the Upper Senior School through strategic planning, policies, regulations, budgets and procedures;
• Develop, monitor and evaluate the Upper Senior School curriculum, timetable, duty rotas, teaching and learning to achieve high academic standards for all subjects with an emphasis on improving English ability;
• Line manage the Assistant Head of Upper Senior to ensure the highest standards for the delivery of IGCSE and A-level curriculum to the students, and to monitor the effectiveness of the Heads of Department and the tutor system;
• Formulate an accurate and valid assessment system to improve continuously students’ learning abilities and exam skills;
• Support staff recruitment and retention, and provide training, supervision and evaluation for professional development;
• Line manage and support the work of the Parent Communication Officer for liaison between the school and parents to encourage participation in school life; promptly reply to parent queries, resolving or escalating issues to the Principal;
• Work closely with pastoral leaders and housemasters to provide a first-class boarding experience for all students in the Upper Senior School;
• Lead on student behaviour and motivation together with the Upper Senior School pastoral team; nurture student leadership and student voice through the student council and student offices;
• Oversee the coordination of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Programme;
• Work closely with the university applications team to ensure students enter universities reflecting their abilities and aspirations;
• Work with the ECA Coordinator to arrange a comprehensive ECA programme;
• Take an active role to support the marketing and admissions of the school, interviewing and assessing students who wish to join the Upper Senior School;
• Work with other school sections and departments to ensure students’ effective transition and the smooth operation of the school campus;
• Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as directed by the Principal.
