Salary: £48,802 to £53,682 per annum (dependent on skills and experience) on the STEM S2 scale.

Location: Boulby Underground Laboratory, Saltburn-by-the-Sea

We are now inviting applications for the position of Health, Safety and Environment Manager at Boulby Underground Laboratory: the UK’s deep underground science facility.

The role involves:  

· Develop and maintain the HS&E governance and management systems for the facility and science-based operations associated with the laboratory – meeting all the statutory compliance requirements and standards of both the mine and STFC 

· Assist and advise facility team and science users in developing new HS&E management materials for new facility and science operations and in updating materials and content or existing operations and projects 

· Develop and maintain systems for oversight of adherence to HS&E systems of team member and science users 

· Develop and maintain systems for facility HS&E systems review and incident and near miss reporting 

· Develop and maintain systems for team and science user HS&E training. Provide general and specific HS&E training and advice for facility team and science users

· Maintain regular and good communication with HS&E department of both the mine owners (ICL), STFC and collaborating universities/research institutions (as required). 

Wider Team and Facility Responsibilities

· Support the upkeep and development of facility and team organisation and communication systems.

· Communicate with the team and associated stakeholders, in meetings and outside.

· Act as representative of the facility in meetings and interactions with local and external facility stakeholders, collaborators, visitors and users 

· Provide practical support for infrastructure and operations needs of hosted science projects

· Occasional supervision of visitors and visiting scientists.  

Essential:

· Health and safety qualifications: NEBOSH diploma or equivalent.

· Educated to degree or HND level, preferably in a science, engineering or technology discipline.

· Significant working experience in a HS&E advisory role, implementing HS&E systems and controls (S&I)

· Knowledge and experience of general environmental management and particularly environmental sustainability planning and delivery.

 Strong organisational skills. Experience of developing and employing organisational systems to manage complex or varied operations. (S&I)

· Excellent communication skills, to be able to effectively communicate with a range of facility stakeholders, including scientists and engineers, mining personnel, the general public, visiting VIPs, upper level science and mining management. (S&I)

· Experience of preparing and delivering engaging and effective face to face HS&E training (S&I)

· Ability to prepare reports or briefing papers for the Facility Director and senior stakeholders where necessary, as part of STFC’s and ICL HS&E governance and assurance processes (S&I)

· Experience of conducting audits, presenting audit finding and assisting with the development of action plans (S&I)

· A positive, proactive and enthusiastic approach to work and delivery of the facility vision and goals, adapting and helping team members as/when needed. (I)

-Ability and willingness to play a leadership role in small and active team in a unique, interesting and challenging environment (S&I)

- Excellent computer literacy with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (S&I)

-Good mobility and physical fitness - suited to working in a mining and science laboratory environment, and must possess a UK driver’s license (S&I)
