Job description

About the Job

Interview date: 26 July 2024

Part time 0.4 FTE (14.8 hours)

Fixed term for 12 months

We are seeking an inspirational Lecturer in Biomedical Science with clinical experience to join our Life Sciences team. You will join a growing and collegiate team with an embedded culture of student-focused teaching and high impact research.

The successful applicant will primarily support teaching on our successful IBMS accredited BSc Biomedical Science programme, but an ability to teach across the wider subject area would be an advantage. You will make a positive contribution to the student experience and the design and development of high-quality and inclusive teaching and learning materials. Applications are welcomed from individuals with extensive clinical experience with a desire to develop the next generation of Biomedical Scientists.

We are looking to recruit individuals who share our passion for inclusion, aspiration, sustainability, trust, and creativity, and who will play a key role in supporting ambition, creating opportunities, and delivering impact.

You will also be expected to contribute to the research and scholarly output of the subject area and work with other researchers within the Faculty and wider University. Research and scholarship are supported through our research centres, mentor scheme, and 25 days’ leave for scholarly activity.

We want you to be able to carry out your work in a way that best supports UON and our students, but also you as an individual. We understand this may vary between different areas of the university as well as from one person to another.  With Smarter Working you can work with increased flexibility, if you would like to, which can facilitate greater freedom and autonomy.

About you

You will have a practice-based background in Biomedical Science with expertise in at least one of the following areas:

Clinical Pathology, Biochemistry, Immunology or Microbiology.

You will have experience of teaching or training and the use of digital technologies in this context.  The successful candidate will be ICT literate and have experience in leading or mentoring colleagues or students.  A track record of effective partnership working to develop scholarship and employability opportunities would be strongly advantageous.

You will be highly disciplined, organised, supportive, and able to work collegiately within a team. The ability to produce research publications, successful grant applications, and/or generate income would be welcomed.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree qualification or equivalent in relevant subject

Desirable

  • Master’s degree in relevant subject
  • Relevant professional qualification eg HCPC
  • Doctorate in relevant subject, completed or within 12 months of completion
  • Professional Recognition as HEA Fellow (D2) or teaching qualification recognised by HESA, or willingness to obtain within an agreed timescale

Faculty

Based in the Faculty of Arts, Science & Technology.  The Life Sciences division is part of the Science Subject area, along with Environmental and Geographical Science, Sport and Exercise Science.  The Life Sciences team deliver undergraduate degrees in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Biological Science and Health Science, postgraduate research degrees and MSc Molecular Medicine.

The University’s Waterside Campus is based in Northampton Town. You will benefit from purpose-built teaching and research facilities, a supportive team, and well-established and sustainable links with our regional partners.

About Us

Come to the University of Northampton and you will see that we do things a bit differently.

We are one of the youngest universities in the UK but we are already leading the way in adding value to society, which we call social impact. We have won multiple awards for our work in this area, among others, but what matters the most to us is ensuring that our students and graduates have the opportunity to make their mark on the world too. That’s why we were the first university in the UK to be named as a Changemaker Campus in 2012.

We want to break the mould of what Higher Education can be. This has led us to build a whole new University from the ground up that is designed to reflect the way that students actually learn rather than the way they are expected to learn. Waterside Campus opened in September 2018.

Our commitment to transforming lives and inspiring change is at the heart of all that we do.

Right to Work

All candidates will be asked to provide proof of eligibility to work in the UK at interview.

Due to the requirements laid out by UK Visas and Immigration regarding Right to Work in the UK, the University can only accept applications from individuals who currently have a status allowing them to work in the UK for this position. Due to this criteria we regret that we are unable to offer sponsorship at this time.

Equality

We welcome applications from underrepresented groups.

The University of Northampton is committed to providing a vibrant, ethical and sustainable work, study and living environment that values equality, diversity and inclusion.

This commitment, along with our legal and moral obligations, provides an inclusive environment for staff, students and the public who may be affected by our activities.

Together @ UON confirms our commitment to equality and inclusion, underpinned by our belief in taking action. We are dedicated to creating an environment that celebrates equality and harnesses the power of diversity.

Together @ UON demonstrates our pledge to our staff, students and partners to nurture and develop an environment where equality and inclusion can thrive whilst we Transform Lives and Inspire Change.
