Undertake a full teaching load, including the development, delivery and evaluation of modules/programmes within the undergraduate provision of Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy within the School and where appropriate undergraduate dentistry. To clinically supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To pursue excellence in teaching and inspire others to do the same.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching
- Independently contribute to module and curriculum development and lead modules at undergraduate level, inspiring students.
- Deliver didactic and clinical teaching on the BSc in Dental Therapy and Hygiene and Diploma in Dental Hygiene programme.
- Manage and supervise undergraduate projects relating to own area of work and the organisation of external activities such as clinical placements and field trips.
- Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to students, building and establishing trust.
Scholarship
- Contribute to scholarship in the area of Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums and to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
- Where applicable, engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work.
- Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community.
- Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with assessment and examinations (setting, standard setting and marking papers and providing constructive verbal and written feedback to students), programme administration and participation in committee work.
Clinical
- The successful candidate will be awarded an appropriate honorary contract by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and will have the opportunity to treat their own patients as part of the role.
- To carry out other clinical tasks as required.
- To participate in the management/medical audit requirements of the department in liaison with other colleagues and in line with the NHS Trust policy on the implementation of clinical governance.
- To undertake administrative duties associated with NHS clinical activities.

Other
- Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Education
1. Evidence of competency and a qualification in Dental Therapy & Dental Hygiene (BSc or Diploma in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene or BSc in Dental Therapy).
2. Hold full General Dental Council registration.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3. Significant Teaching experience at a high level of quality at undergraduate level with particular reference to Dental Hygiene and Dental Hygiene & Therapy curricula.
4. Ability to supervise, teach and assess clinical procedures in Dental Hygiene and dental Therapy and take independent decisions when necessary and seek advice as appropriate.
5. Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes.
6. Demonstrable knowledge of clinical governance
7. Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
8. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media.
9. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor.
10. Ability to act as module leader and co-ordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met with a proven ability to work without close supervision.
Desirable Criteria
1. Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning or equivalent qualification or experience
2. Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community
3. A willingness to take responsibility for academically related administration.
Additional Information
