About The University

Swansea University is a research-led university that has been making a difference since 1920. The University community thrives on exploration and discovery and offers the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by an enviable quality of life.

Our stunning waterfront campuses and multicultural community make us a desirable workplace for colleagues from around the world. Our reward and benefits, and ways of working enable those who join us to have enriching careers, matched by an excellent work-life balance.

About The Role

The Department of Chemistry within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) delivers internationally excellent and world-leading research in polymer and materials chemistry, green energy, energy storage, semiconductors and chemistry in health applications. With state of the art facilities, including the new £90M Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials, and having achieved top 20 UK Chemistry status in the Complete University Guide and the Guardian University Guide, we are growing as an ambitious and forward thinking department that provides our students with a modern chemistry experience and acts as a hub to strengthen our existing and high quality chemistry-facing research activities across and beyond the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

The primary emphasis for the appointed postholder will be on achieving research excellence, producing world-leading publications, securing competitive funding, and creating real-world impact. We invite applications from highly enthusiastic candidates with strong research expertise in any area of applied Computational Chemistry and molecular modelling, although preference will be given to candidates with a specific focus in at least one of the areas of energy harvesting and storage, materials (including biomaterials), semiconductors, medicinal chemistry, and the use of machine learning and AI for chemical discovery. The ideal candidate will bring know-how and skills complementary to those existing in SEAS to strengthen capacity. The applicant will have a strong national and international reputation and will successfully establish their independent collaborative research programme. An industry-facing approach focussing on knowledge transfer and innovation will be looked at favourably.

As all our courses are research-led and practice-driven, the successful applicant should be able to bring their background into their teaching to enhance our students’ experience both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Academic Career Pathway

The pathway for this post is Research. The Academic Career Pathways (ACP) scheme is designed to ensure that academic strengths whether in research, teaching, the wider student experience, leadership or innovation and engagement, are all appropriately recognised, developed, valued, and rewarded. For further information, please see our ACP webpage.

The University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity in all its practices and activities. We aim to establish an inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the following protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, ethnic and national origin), religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation.

As an inclusive and welcoming workplace, we value people for their skills regardless of their background. Applications are welcome in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than those submitted in English.
