The Faculty of Advocates is one of Scotland's most ancient and prestigious organisations. The professional body for the Scottish bar, the Faculty of Advocates is a membership organisation with the Advocates Library at its heart. Established formally in 1689, the Library blends tradition with its modern role as a busy working law library, providing a library and information service to members of the Faculty and acting as Scotland’s national law library. The Faculty also has responsibility for maintaining a formal relationship with the Abbotsford Trust- located at Sir Walter Scott’s former home. The following vacancy has arisen:
Post: Library Assistant – General and Administrative

Salary: Grade 4a: £26,833- £32,616 per annum
All new appointments will be made at the start of the salary scale
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday - Friday: 9.00am – 5.00pm

This role reports to the Systems Librarian and will undertake tasks across various aspects of the Advocates Library, providing support in library administration, systems maintenance, projects, and carry out daily duties to assist both the Collection & Access Services (CAS) and Research & Reference Services (RRS) teams.
Key responsibilities include covering library administration duties such as managing stationary supplies, the Library Admin calendar, assist in troubleshooting photocopier issues and processing invoices. This role will understand how to use the Library Management System (LMS) and assist the Systems Librarian to test the system during upgrades and to plan and rollout the next phase of the LMS project. This position will also assist with the archiving project by sorting and recording archive materials and will assist the CAS & RRS teams to shelve, file and tidy materials, while undertaking loose-leaf updating and stock tidying as required.
The successful candidate must be educated to HNC level or above, and at least 1 year’s experience working in a library or office environment would be desirable. The successful candidate must demonstrate a ‘customer’ focused approach to their work and demonstrate a logical and creative approach to finding solutions. Good interpersonal skills, the ability to prioritise and manage conflicting demands and be able to work with discretion are also essential.
