Job description

The electricity network is at the heart of the UK energy system, transporting power from generators like nuclear plants and wind farms to homes, businesses and industry across the UK. As the UK moves towards Net Zero, more electricity than ever before is required to replace carbon emitting technologies with green alternatives, such as renewable generation, electric vehicles and heat pumps. To be ready for this, the UK electricity network will require its biggest expansion in history.
We are recruiting for three Electricity Networks Analysts across our team to support across a range of high priority electricity network areas. This is an opportunity to work in the heart of energy policy, helping to shape decisions which will affect the country for generations to come. Person specification

To be part of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Analyst Community you will need to be a "badged" member or join of one of the underpinning government analytical professions. We are specifically looking to recruit analysts to the: Government Social Research, Government Operational Research Service or Government Statistician Group. We will check your eligibility for badged membership as part of your application.

Analyst Professions Eligibility Requirements:

Government Social Research: Expertise via a relevant qualification or professional experience as follows:

+ For qualification route, must hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:1, or 2:2 with a postgraduate degree, in a social science subject. Qualifying social science subjects are those that contain substantial social research methods training (comprising around one-third of modules taken in the course).

+ For professional experience route, must hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:1, or 2:2 with a postgraduate degree, in any subject, or hold a degree equivalent, and have at least 4 years’ social research practice experience. Social research practice experience consists of experience working in a research agency, market research agency or specialist research team. + Must hold an undergraduate degree at a minimum of 2:2 in a numerate subject containing at least 25% taught statistical content (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar)

+ A higher degree, e.g. a MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences,
Business Studies, Psychology, Geography or similar)

+ Have worked in a statistical or data science field and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a log book) in statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five)

+ Have achieved or are on track to achieve a level four apprenticeship including at least two years in a statistical or data analysis field in government and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development in statistics or data analysis (https://analysisfunction.civilservice.gov.uk/government-statistical-service-and-statistician-group/gss-careers-and-learning/joining-us/)

Government Operational Research: High numeracy. You must possess a 2:1 or higher numerate degree, or a 2:2 with relevant work experience or postgraduate qualification. (http://www.operational-research.gov.uk/recruitment/requirements/)

Skills and experience

Candidates will have:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Able to present their analysis in a clear and compelling way.

  • Critical and creative thinking skills. Able to identify and apply innovative approaches and techniques for analysing evidence and addressing any gaps. Comfortable working with quantitative and qualitative evidence.

  • Problem-solving skills. Naturally curious and able to identify efficient and effective solutions to exploit opportunities and address problems.

  • Ability and motivation to learn and use complex models to gain new insights and apply these to policy making.

  • Strong team working and interpersonal skills. Able to build trusting and credible relationships with your colleagues, including senior officials to collaborate on projects and decision-making.

  • Enthusiasm for our work. Being willing to embrace new opportunities and have the drive to learn new skills.

Requirements for each analytical profession:
You must be able to demonstrate that you satisfy the eligibility criteria and have the competencies required at the HEO-level for the profession within the Government Analysis Function that you would wish to become a member.
