Our client a leading firm of Accountants and Business Advisers operating across the UK, Ireland, and the Nordics are looking for an NHS Payroll Specialist based in the Portsmouth office. This is a hybrid role.

As an NHS Payroll Specialist, you will manage the end-to-end payroll process and auto enrolment compliance for a portfolio of clients, and developing relationships with your clients while ensuring effective communication with the wider offices, HMRC, and other third-party providers.
You will also work as part of the wider team to review work produced by more junior team members and support the Payroll Manager.
Responsibilities and Duties include:
- Manage the end-to-end payroll process and auto enrolment compliance for a portfolio of clients
- Deal with all associated payroll processing tasks required for completion of the payroll process
- Develop relationships with your clients while ensuring effective communication with the wider offices, HMRC, and other third-party providers
- Accurately process pension deductions from salary in accordance with established NHS pension policies and procedures
- Keep up to date with ongoing changes to NHS pension legislation
- Effectively liaise with NHS Pensions Online to resolve any employee queries and error handling issues
- Liaise with GP Practices/NHS organizations to provide expert knowledge on the application of NHS pension tiered contributions to payroll records
- Ensure monthly balances are correct and accurate monthly contributions are paid over to NHS pensions via Pensions Online or Making Contribution Payments (MCP)
- Lead by example in regards to attitude and processing of payrolls, so others in the team will follow suit
- Be the first point of contact to assist and support the team in responding to queries from clients, HMRC, 3rd party providers, etc.
- Complete regular training for the wider team, ranging from information about legislation to systems
- Handle any ad-hoc duties or projects that may be necessary
- Produce and develop ad hoc financial and operational reporting as required
Experience Required and Desired but not essential:
- Over two years’ experience dealing with NHS Payrolls (experience in a bureau environment is highly desirable)
- End-to-end Payroll processing experience including pensions, benefits, and statutory payments
- Knowledge of NHS Pension tiered contributions
- Knowledge of NHS Pensions online administration including SD55 annual updates, AW8, RF12, Starters, SD55 Leavers
- Knowledge of Agenda for Change terms and conditions (Desirable)
- Knowledge of Medical and Dental terms and conditions (Desirable)
- Ability to manually calculate a payroll
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail across both manual and systems-based work
- Natural ability to coordinate, prioritize, and multitask with little supervision
- Strong customer-focused approach, ability to handle customer queries by telephone and email
- Adaptability to a highly changeable environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure while meeting tight deadlines
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of payroll legislation, processing, and auto enrolment regulations
- Effective client management experience and steps towards staff management
- Mentorship and coaching experience to support other team members to ensure they perform work duties
- Ideally with a CIPP Foundation degree qualification or working towards this qualification
