Job description

Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: Around 1,000 employees contribute to the tackling of climate change, the sustainable use of the world's coastal systems and the resource-compatible enhancement of the quality of life. From fundamental research to practical applications, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range. Institute of Materials Physics The Institute of Materials Physics operates instruments on large-scale equipment for structural investigations of materials and works on the development and characterization of novel lightweight materials for high-temperature applications, for example in aircraft turbines and automotive engines. Hereon has a unique infrastructure for complementary materials research with photons and neutrons. Doctoral Student Reference code: _2 - 2024/WP 2 Commencement date: 1 st March, 2024 Work location: Hamburg Application deadline: February 19 th , 2024 Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon operates an outstation at DESY in Hamburg and provides access to highly brilliant synchrotron radiation to its own researchers and guests within its German Engineering Materials Science Centre (GEMS). An emphasis is on unique sample environments for in-situ measurements to observe materials under processing conditions and in operation. A current research project involves the operation of a new L-PBF (laser powder bed fusion) machine for in-situ additive manufacturing experiments conducted at synchrotron beamlines. This approach allows for unprecedented analyses of the evolving microstructure and residual stresses during the layer-by-layer deposition of an additively manufactured component. Besides in-situ experiments, production of samples for ex-situ characterization and microstructural characterization will be part of this project. The project will be conducted in close cooperation with the Erich Schmid Institute of Materials Science of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria) and regular visits of their labs are part of the project. The research will focus on advanced steels. For this research, we are looking for a doctoral student doing experimental investigations at the Hereon outstation at DESY in Hamburg. The position is initially limited to three years. The place of employment is Hamburg. producing samples with the L-PBF technique characterization of microstructure (electron microscopy), mechanical and physical properties carrying out experiments at synchrotron beamlines using X-ray diffraction and scattering techniques performing in-situ experiments at synchrotron beamlines with the new L-PBF machine using X-ray diffraction and radiography techniques evaluating and interpreting the X-ray data using existing or own programs presenting and publishing scientific results university degree in physics, materials science or a related discipline qualifying for a doctoral degree at a German university experience with X-ray diffraction techniques applied to metallic materials technical skills with research equipment and experience in experimental research programming skills and experience with the analysis of large amounts of data experience with metallographic specimen preparation and electron microscopy will be an asset ability to interact with an international team excellent communication skills very good English language skills; German language skills will be an asset an exciting and varied job in a research centre with more than 1,100 employees from around 50 nations individual opportunities for further training social benefits according to the collective agreement of the public service and remuneration an excellent technical infrastructure and modern workplace equipment very good compatibility of private and professional life through offers of mobile and flexible work supervision of the Doctoral project and opportunity to earn a doctoral degree
