Your New Role:
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Fixed Term Principal Engineer/DPE to join our Department in Cardiff.
Core Valley Lines (CVL) is the transformation project by which a new metro service is being provided from Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr, Rhymney and Coryton, through Queen Street to Cardiff Bay, Cardiff Central, Penarth and Barry. New signalling system, track loops, electrification system and stations and depots are built under this programme transforming the way the people in South Wales travel in the area around Cardiff.
Principal Engineer/DPE plays an important part in leading in providing engineering judgement both in design and construction activities to ensure end to end Engineering Assurance in accordance with the contract requirements, technical specifications and applicable standards and codes of practice in line with the Programme Engineering Assurance Plan and NR/L2/RSE/02009
The standard hours of work are 37.5 per week.
Your responsibilities:
- Agree the design deliverables to be produced at each Plan of Works Stages.
- Review the programme requirements from the Sponsor/Principal Project Manager.
- Raise and manage the approval of any deviations from standards or non-compliances to requirements.
- Undertake technical acceptance of design deliverables as defined within the discipline-specific Network Rail standards.
- Approve DRNs produced by Project Engineers for discipline based technical acceptance.
- Answer TQs/RFIs from the design team and to coordinate a response to TQs/RFIs raised by the construction team to the design team.
- Carry out assurance activities in coordination with construction engineering reps (CREs & CEMs).
- Attend IDC/IDRs chaired by the CEM.
- Collate design assurance evidence as applicable to discipline standards, using the programme processes.
- Support the PM in the collation of Works Information Packs through interfacing with the CREs.
- Review and incorporate CSM hazard mitigations and Safety Requirements into design.
- Clarify and incorporate Interoperable (NTSN) design requirements into designs.
- Support the CRE-D with NTSN compliance statement and evidence development.
- Support the Requirements team in ensuring the requirements management plan is met.
- Clarify and incorporate CDM hazard mitigation/control requirement into designs, ensuring that the design team keep the Hazard Log up to date at all times.
- Track and resolve parallel design interfaces and risks.
- Collate construction/installation/testing assurance evidence as applicable to discipline standards, using the programme processes.
- Support the project approvals with AsBo/ApBo and ORR as required.
- Chairs Hazard Identification (HAZID) workshops and Hazard Review Panels (HRPs)
- Accountable for closure of hazards
- Produces the System Definition for Safety Justification Reports
- Own acceptance of V&V.
We want to hear from you if you have:
- University degree in Engineering
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution or working towards it.
- Relevant experience of railway engineering systems and equipment, and implementation specifically in design management and/or assurance.
- Experience of large programmes/projects especially previous experience as NR DPE desirable
- Experience of railway engineering design & development works
- A strong attention to detail.
- Ability to use of typical industry software packages (e.g. Projectwise, DOORS/Complypro etc.).
- Work in a professional and proactive manner including developing the safety culture with the sub-contractors.
- Ensure that all accidents and incidents are fully reported.
- Participate in regular monthly safety meetings with the leadership team.
- Responsible for complying with the alcohol and drugs policy.
- Responsible for wearing and maintaining in good condition any Personal Protective Equipment provided to them for their protection and bringing to their supervisor’s attention any defects or shortcomings with the equipment.
- Responsible for ensuring their own safety and the safety of others affected by their acts and omissions.
- Responsible for bringing any unsafe working activities or hazards to the immediate attention of their respective manager.
