Role Description The Department of Mathematics is seeking to appoint a talented new colleague to join our vibrant Statistics and Probability group. You will be carrying out high-level research combining statistics and its applications and have a record of engaging with income-generating activities for your research, as well as the capacity to form interdisciplinary collaborations and interact with industry. You will have a track record of supervising PhD students commensurate with your career stage and be a dedicated and effective teacher of mathematics, able to teach a range of courses in statistics and to supervise MSc projects. We are a research-led department, with high-calibre staff who produce innovative and technically demanding research on a world stage spanning areas in pure, applied mathematics and statistics. All of our research was rated world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in REF2021 in all three categories: outputs, impact and environment. Only three other departments in the UK achieved this. Our distinctive York strength lies in our well-established high quality multidisciplinary research involving Mathematics and Statistics with other science departments such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Psychology. Our expertise in large-scale data analytics has brought significant UKRI investments, strategically linking Statistics at York with other UK universities, as well as across different departments within the Faculty of Sciences. The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent experience in an area of Statistics or a closely related discipline. You will have outstanding and externally recognised knowledge, bringing new expertise in Statistical methodology and computation developed in response to real applied problems, that will deepen and/or broaden our group’s existing strengths. Along with a substantial publication record in high quality peer-reviewed journals, you will have the ability to define, attract and lead funding for internationally excellent research in Statistics, and the ability to design teaching material and to deliver a range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will have the opportunity to lead the development and teaching of a new MSc programme in Statistical Data Science and to assist in the founding of an Institute of Trusted Data Science in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.
