Job description

We are actively seeking Registered Managers for various positions within our organisation. Pay grade is dependent upon experience and qualifications.

The purpose of the role is:

  • To be the Ofsted Registered Manager for the home.
  • A commitment to continuously work to improve the quality of services by taking overall responsibility for site leadership as the Registered Manager.
  • Required to manage and supervise staff and resources to ensure high quality standards of care and service are delivered to regulatory, contractual and company standards.
  • To provide defined operational support and management and is required to drive quality, business development and financial viability in both existing provisions and new services.
  • Ensure children and young people are afforded the highest standards and quality of care, within a home that offers a safe, therapeutic, nurturing and comfortable environment with a staff team that is supportive, and enabling, providing opportunities and experiences to instil positive values and reaffirm the importance of children enjoying a childhood.
  • To lead and manage both employees and resources to ensure high standards of service are achieved within the home, exceeding regulatory standards.
  • To manage the budget of the home and ensure the business remains viable and to meet and exceed the key performance indicators, quality and performance for children and young people. • To be resilient, courageous and passionate in your commitment to providing the best care possible to children and young people.
  • To undertake direct work with the children and young people we have care for. • To be an outstanding manager who is an ambassador to the company and demonstrates shared values and practices in line with the company vision, values and ethos.
  • To be committed and motivated to staff training and performance development. Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Job Description and Person Specification

Professional, therapeutic and nurturing childcare practice

  • To be co-responsible for assisting in the promotion of professional, therapeutic and nurturing childcare practice in accordance with Sankofa Specialist Care’s policies and procedures.
  • To be co-responsible for providing care, support and supervision to children and young people in their care.
  • To be co-responsible for undertaking household related tasks including [not limited to] cooking, shopping, laundry and the promotion of independent living skills to the children and young people in their care.
  • To maintain an environment of therapeutic care for all children and young people. • To work restoratively with children and young people.
  • To work with consistent boundaries in order to create safety for the children and young people. • To be aware of the children’s rights and to work in an anti-discriminatory and anti- oppressive manner. • To work alongside the children and young people to help develop a true sense of identity and feeling of self-worth.
  • To be sensitive to the needs of individual children and young people, taking account of race, culture, language, sexuality and religion.
  • To engage, communicate, talk and listen to the children and young people. To observe their behaviour and record and report significant features.
  • To support the children and young people to integrate into social activities and where appropriate educational settings mainstream school.
  • To use reactive strategies to support the behaviour of children and young people who are unable to manage their own behaviour.
  • To embed the company’s therapeutic principles and practice.
  • To be an allocated carer of a child or young person where designated.
  • To promote the participation of the children and young people placed in the decision-making process of the home.
  • To ensure that the physical, emotional and psychological needs children and young people placed at Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd are met.
  • To support children and young people by driving them to home visits, school and appointments etc. that is in or out of the local area and this may involve long distances via motorways. • To ensure the children have a balanced diet in accordance with the support and advice of the company nutritionist.
  • To actively feed into the staff supervisory model of therapeutics and interventions. • To ensure that the care, education, and well-being of children and young people is maintained at the highest level at all times.
  • To promote the Practice of working in partnership with our children and young people, their significant others and other professional agencies involved in the care of the children and young people. • Arrange admissions of children and young people to the home in line with Company policy and procedure and in accordance with the matching framework.
  • Ensure that all transitions for children and young people are well planned and communicated. • Encourage communication and interaction within the home in order to broaden life and stimulate interests.
  • Ensure that all children and young people receive appropriate medical, dental and other ancillary care in line with care plans.
  • Encourage, stimulate and participate in social activities for the benefit of children and young people. • Meet with Social Workers to develop, review and act upon individual care plans and risk assessments. • Liaison with children and young person’s family/significant others as appropriate. • To ensure that all children and young people at the home receive consistent and regular therapeutic and nutritional intervention as agreed in their IPP.
  • To ensure that the children and young people’s needs are recognised and met. This includes ensuring that they are free from discrimination within the home and to challenge discrimination from outside the home.
  • To ensure that educational activities and a programme of meaningful activities is available to all children and young people.

Leadership and Management

  • Acting as a Responsible Individual as and when and where necessary.
  • Provide a co-mentoring role for the Responsible Individual within the Company. • Lead the implementation of new services, referrals and admissions and share best practice with Responsible Individual and the wider team.
  • Effectively lead shifts, direct and support the staff team.
  • To plan and implement the staff rota in partnership with the wider team.
  • To carry out duties in line with Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd. policies and procedures. • To promote anti-discriminatory practices and equal opportunity practices in line with Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd. policy and procedure.
  • To lead, attend and take an active part in team meetings, handovers and supervisions. • To actively participate and promote the use of reflective practice and peer supervision. • To maintain a record of continuous personal development (CPD file) and build an individual portfolio. • To participate in the annual Staff Performance Development and Review Appraisal process and ensure evidence for appraisal is collated throughout the year within CPD portfolio.
  • To attend training and maintain professional development to meet the demands of the job and to participate and implement Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd.’s Positive Behaviour Management policy and procedure including Positive Handling and Restraint techniques which includes the ability to physically hold children and young people in order to keep them and others safe at all times.
  • To be a positive ambassador to Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd, ensuring the preservation and maintenance of our reputation in all contact with internal, external agencies and individuals and the wider public.
  • To comply with the Code of Practice for Social Care workers. To be aware of Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd policy on Codes of Conduct and to set an acceptable role model standard, internal and external to the company.
  • To carry out duties as stated in the home’s Statement of Purpose in line with the Quality Standards.
  • To act as a member of the staff team, supporting colleagues and being prepared to receive support and advice as necessary.

  • To be responsible for the recruitment/appointment of staff, ensuring the effective application of Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd. recruitment and selection procedures and manage and oversee the Induction, Discipline, Capability and Grievance procedures.
  • Ensure sufficient and appropriate levels and mix of staff are recruited and rostered in accordance with needs and requirements of Children and Young People at all times.
  • Ensure staff are inducted, trained, motivated and supported to achieve company standards and deliver the highest levels of care.

Building and supporting positive relationships

  • To be a positive role model for the children/young people and colleagues and encourage both to develop meaningful, safe and supportive relationships and attachments.
  • To liaise, where necessary with other professionals i.e. schools, social workers. • To actively share information with relevant professionals involved with the child/ren and young person/s.
  • To liaise with the significant others of children and young people in your care on a day-to-day basis, participating in the assessment of the children and young person’s needs and the implementation of placement plans and risk assessments.
  • To work in partnership with educational staff to ensure that the educational needs of the children and young people are met.
  • To maintain positive and professional relationships with all children and young people in our care, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, regulation and legislation.
  • To not to work in isolation and to ensure that a team ethos is adopted majority of the time except in circumstances where appropriate, using own initiative and responding to crisis in a calm and collective manner and in accordance with the company’s policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external colleagues including non-executive directors, Responsible Individual, peers and functional colleagues throughout the company

Financial management

  • Ensuring that the service is financially sustainable including by safely supporting new referrals into the service and managing costs appropriately.
  • To manage the designated budget, ensuring value for money is achieved.
  • Monitor and control expenditure of the homes spending.
  • To take control of all of the home’s spending evidencing all income and expenditure. • To monitor the children and young person’s spending of their allowances.
  • To authorise and monitor items purchased for the home.
  • Investigate and report any financial irregularities appropriately.
  • To undertake financial audits.
  • To ensure effective systems are in place for the recording and maintenance of all financial systems in the home, electronic and manual.
  • Ensuring to maintain meticulous records and documentary evidence of all income and expenditure. Safeguarding
  • To model a robust commitment to safeguarding, including Health & Safety, for all children and young people and staff at the home.
  • A strong commitment to safe and appropriate recruitment to meet the needs of the children and young people and the service.
  • To be alert to signs of distress or abuse and to ensure that the children and young people are monitored and protected and have their needs met ensuring that all safeguarding needs are met. • To actively promote the welfare, safety, personal development and wellbeing of children and young people placed with Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd.
  • To take responsibility for own learning relevant to safeguarding e.g. Safeguarding, Prevent, when children go missing/awol and so forth.
  • To partake in safeguarding investigations and delegated enquiries as and when directed. Health and Safety
  • To manage and implement health and safety processes in the home including implementation and monitoring of risk assessments.
  • To ensure the home environment is maintained to a high standard of safety and cleanliness at all times, taking into consideration current government guidance relating to infection control measures within residential children’s homes.
  • Ensuring to report to the maintenance team, any identified repairs, hazards etc.
  • To ensure to maintain the health and safety responsibilities of self and others at all times in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Care management and planning

  • To assist in preparation for reviews and meetings and attend when required.
  • To contribute to care planning and the implementation of these plans.
  • To work alongside the MDT to enable effective integration of care and therapy. • To be aware of the content within care plans and risk management plans and to update these as and when identified to do so.

Communication and ICT

  • Ensure that all children/young people’s documentation and records are maintained to a high standard in a timely manner,
  • To maintain excellent communication and interpersonal skills and written records. • To maintain a clear desk policy, ensuring the preservation of confidentiality.
  • To be aware of the Caldicott Principles in the protection of information.
  • To be proficient in the use of all Microsoft Office applications.

Meeting Standards / Regulatory / Compliance / Quality requirements

  • Implement appropriate systems to ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Ensuring day to day operations at the home meet the organisational requirements for quality management, health and safety, legal and regulatory requirements, environmental policies and general duty of care
  • Ensure that all employees within the home understand their role, so that they are able to undertake their duties and responsibilities to a consistently high standard in the normal course of their duties. • Comply with all statutory / legislative requirements.
  • Comply with Sankofa Specialist Care Ltd. policies and procedures and all other relevant supplementary instructions.
  • To liaise with the Responsible Individual in the development and review of new and existing policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with and co-operate at all times with relevant Local Authority employees and other professionals, meeting their requirements as appropriate.
  • Prepare detailed reports for Statutory and Case Reviews to a consistently high standard. • Meet legislative and company Health and Safety standards.
  • Implement quality assurance practices to monitor and evaluate standards of the children and young people in our care and of the team performance, to support the company to achieve its objective to continuously improve upon quality.

Other Conditions

In partnership with the wider team, the RM will be responsible:

  • To work a rota pattern that includes weekends, evenings, sleep over and bank holiday working. To understand that the rota is subject to change at short notice. To fully participate in the on call system.
  • To work as required within the organisation and in any location, which may be outside of the area.
  • To have an individual role and responsibility within a team such as Equality Representative, Health & Safety Representative, Education Representative, Complaints & Newsletter Representative, Young Persons Health Representative.
  • Be aware of racial, cultural and religious issues including equality and diversity. • To maintain confidentiality and observe data protection guidelines and legislation. • The post is subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • To undertake any other duties that may be reasonably requested.
