Research Assistant/Research Fellow - Language And Reading

The post will be based within the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (www.ucl.ac.uk/pals) (PALS) in the Faculty of Brain Sciences. The successful applicant will be affiliated with the Language and Cognition research department and also the Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL). The postholder will be part of the Literacy and Deafness Research Lab (LADDER Lab). About the role This is an exciting opportunity to join a team, led by Dr Fiona Kyle, on an ESRC funded project investigating successful reading progress for deaf and hearing children. The research team consists of Dr Kate Rowley, Professor Ros Herman, Prof Nikki Botting and Dr Katie Mason. The post-holder will assist with recruiting participants; collecting data in schools; data management; data analysis and dissemination activities. There are two posts currently being advertised by DCAL to explore reading ability in deaf children. If appropriate candidates are welcome to apply for both. The start date is as soon as possible.The position is available for 21 months with the possibility of an extension. The appointment will be made at the Research Assistant Grade 6B (£37,332 -£39,980 inclusive of LA) level. If the postholder has a PhD they will be appointed at Grade 7 (£42,099) as a Research Fellow. About you The successful candidate will have a BSc in Psychology or a closely related discipline, and experience working with children. They will have knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) equivalent to Level 2 or lived experience of deafness. The post holder will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with deaf and hearing people, and be able to work independently and as part of a team. They will have good organisational skills, record keeping, data collection and data entry skills. Experience of conducting research with deaf adults or children is desirable. The successful candidate will be required to have an enhanced DBS check to carry out the role.
