Job description

Grade UE07: £37,099.00 - £44,263.00 per annum (A revised salary range for this grade of £39,347 to £46,974 is planned to take effect from Spring 2024)

School of Engineering/College of Science & Engineering/Institute for Energy Systems

Full-time: 35 hours per week

Fixed-term: for 30 months

The School of Engineering seeks to appoint a Research Associate in Power Electronics. The position will contribute to the modelling of power electronic systems undertaken as part of the SIF Network DC research program. The appointment will be at UE07 and is available on a fixed term basis for up to 30 months.

The Opportunity:

The Power Electronics research team within the Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint an experienced Research to work on the modelling of high voltage DC (HVDC) systems and DC circuit breakers (DCCB). The successful candidate will be responsible for part of the University of Edinburgh’s contribution to the Network DC project. This is a multiparter project, led by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSE), which aims to advance the readiness of HVDC networks and enable the deployment of multi-terminal DC grids which cannot exist without DCCBs.

Offshore wind will play a leading role in the transition to net zero, with as much as 100GW required to deliver 2050 net zero targets. Efficient connection of this resource will require a mass investment in voltage source-HVDC to make the connection between the generation and shore. To date, offshore HVDC installations have-been dominated by point-to-point links dedicated to single offshore windfarms. However, substantial cost and environmental benefits can be achieved through a move to more complex HVDC grids which make better use of infrastructure and flexible routing of power flows.

Despite potential benefits the use of HVDC networks has remined slow, due to the difficulties in protecting such networks from DC-Faults. To support the development of HVDC grids there is a need to demonstrate the capability of DC Circuit Breakers (DCCBs). Network DC will address this though a comprehensive design and evaluation process targeted at real world deployment of DCCB enabled HVDC networks for offshore wind generation.
