You will work on an exciting project on Future Electric Vehicle Energy networks supporting Renewables (FEVER). This 5-year interdisciplinary EPSRC-funded programme grant will develop and demonstrate fully grid-independent, renewables-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
Your role within this project will be to develop novel digital technologies, such as machine learning, decision-making algorithms and other artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, to realise the FEVER vision. For example, you might work on smart charging algorithms that balance charging demand and supply dynamically, based on current and predicted generation of renewable energy.
You will also support the implementation of a FEVER demonstrator, contributing work on the communications infrastructure that will allow us to monitor and remotely control a proof-of-concept charging station. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to work on an app that EV drivers can use to interact with our demonstrator.
As part of the FEVER project team, you will work with highly interdisciplinary colleagues from computer science, engineering, economics and psychology. Furthermore, you will interact with our industrial stakeholders to help ensure real-world impact. You will also collaborate directly with the Citizen-Centric AI Systems team.
To be successful you will have (or are within 6 months of completing) a PhD (or professional qualifications and experience) in computer science, AI or a relevant topic related to energy systems or transportation. You have the ability to publish and present your work at top international venues, and you need to have programming experience. Ideally, you would have experience programming embedded or IoT devices, especially if this is related to EV charging. Knowledge of relevant protocols / packages, such as CCS, OCPP, OpenEVSE or EVerest, is desirable.
- Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
This role will be offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis for 24 months.
