Job description

Department The York Law School and the Centre for Applied Human Rights (CAHR) at the University of York are looking for a Research Fellow with exceptional quantitative research skills to work on the Beyond Compliance Consortium Research Programme on Building Evidence for Promoting Restraint by Armed Actors.  Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the Beyond Compliance Consortium (BCC) Research Programme is a three-years applied research and knowledge exchange initiative that will contribute to the effective prevention and reduction of humanitarian need and civilian harm and facilitate a broader protective environment in armed conflict. The Consortium is built of nine academic-practitioner partner organisations: the University of York (Principal Investigator - PI), the University of Glasgow (Co-Investigator - CoI), Utrecht University (CoI), Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict (CoI), War Child UK, Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre, Center for Civilians in Conflict, Centre on Armed Groups, and Fight for Humanity. The BCC Research Fellow will conceive and empirically implement a historical database on violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) by armed actors and civilian harm and humanitarian need. The position is available from 1 May 2024 (or soon after, upon agreement). Role The BCC Research Fellow will: To contribute to and/or lead on the production of research outputs and research outcomes, specifically the conception, collection, and analysis of an original database, as described above. Observe a workflow in data management and programming that follows key principles of reproducibility and research transparency. To participate actively in the planning and management of the quantitative research aspects of the BCC Research Programme, including providing expert advice and guidance to other members of the Consortium and where relevant supervising the work of others. To contribute to the public understanding of research and scholarship, through dissemination of results in conferences and postgraduate teaching activities. Skills, Experience & Qualification needed The following are role-specific essential requirements: A first degree in Political Science or Sociology PhD in Political Science or Sociology, or equivalent experience Knowledge of research methods and techniques, with a special focus on quantitative methods, the operationalisation of concepts, data collection, data management, and data analysis Advanced knowledge of relevant statistics software, such as R or Stata Ability to lead and/or take responsibility for a small research project or identified parts of a large project Competency to conduct individual and collaborative research, including by developing research objectives and implementing them Well-developed analytical skills Ability to write up research work for publication and onward dissemination Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with academic and policy audiences, both orally and in writing, using a range of media Experience in using quantitative methods for conducting high quality research Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research Successful management of research projects Evidence of dissemination of scholarly Interview date: To be confirmed For informal enquiries: Please contact Professor Ioana Cismas at ioana.cismas@york.ac.uk The University strives to be diverse and inclusive – a place where we can ALL be ourselves.
