Our Senior Construction Project Managers manage new store and refurbishment projects as well as commercial initiative roll-outs, capital maintenance projects and layout change projects from inception to completion. You will manage multiple projects at any one time; therefore the ability to manage a demanding workload and changing business needs is a must.
Our construction team are currently working on a large number of exciting concept developments and roll-outs across all of our retail formats, from airports, hospitals, railway stations, shopping centres and high streets both in the UK and abroad. As well as the main WHSmith format the team also manage work on a number of other formats including coffee, convenience food and tech stores, as well as managing the implant of concessions into our environments. The work is varied, fast paced and rewarding.
This role is field based; our portfolio covers the whole of the UK plus our International business. You will also be required to be in our London Support Centre every 2 weeks.
Accountabilities for the role:
- Delivery of allocated Construction Projects on time, to budget and to highest quality
Proactively manage the project through the Stage Gate process, from initiation, through planning, cost sign off, contractor selection, landlord approvals, work on site, handover, snagging and final accounts / project closure - Deal and resolve any issues with project delivery or cost during the life of the project, liaising with contractors, landlords and internal stakeholders as required to ensure first class delivery
- Ensure project teams have all relevant and current information available to them to deliver successful projects
- Ensure delivery of project in line with the approved design standards
- Ensure highest standards of safety are achieved through design and delivery
- Provide up to date project information on progress, ensuring clear project reporting is available at all times
- Identify and manage project risk to ensure right first-time projects, every time
- Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to interact at all levels of seniority
- Needs to demonstrate experience and ability to manage in a cost conscious environment
- A ‘can do’ attitude with the ability to manage any challenges
- Ability to deal with ambiguity, and provide clarity to project teams
- A team player who is able to self-manage, yet is willing and able to support colleagues and share best practice
- Previous experience in Construction Project management roles would be highly desirable
- Experience of managing 3rd party contractors and managing suppliers/landlord relationships would be advantageous
Ability to plan and prioritise multiple activities and juggle prioritise effectively - The ability to constructively challenge the norm
Exceptional time management and organisation skills - Valid UK Driving licence
