Job Description
Do you have expertise in therapeutic antibody discovery using in vitro display platforms? Would you like to apply your expertise to impact the next generation bio-therapeutics portfolio in a company that follows the science and turns ideas into life changing medicines? Then AstraZeneca might be the one for you!
About AstraZeneca
At AstraZeneca, we put patients first and strive to meet their unmet needs worldwide. Working here means being entrepreneurial, thinking big and working together to make the impossible a reality. If you are swift to action, confident to lead, willing to collaborate, and curious about what science can do, then you're our kind of person.

To help you maintain your best self, here's a sneak peek into some of the things this site provides for you…Cambridge is one of the most exciting bioscience hotspots in the world and plays a central role in our mission to deliver life-changing medicines to patients. Granta Park has a gym, nursery and central restaurant/coffee place as part of the science park facilities that are accessible to our staff. We also have our own bistro and deli in the AZ buildings. There are regular lunch & learn events including running clubs and after work socials on the last Friday of every month. In mid January you will be required to move to our new start of the art DISC (Discovery Centre) which is also in Cambridge.
Business area
The Biologics Engineering team are responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs to support all therapy area drug discovery pipelines and for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to support future drug discovery efforts.
What you'll do
We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to help support our therapeutic discovery pipeline and develop next generation protein molecules for targeted delivery. The successful candidate will add to our team of multidisciplinary scientists who are excited by research at the interface between technology and biology. You will be a highly productive bench scientist that can design and implement experiments efficiently, as well as analyse, interpret and present data. The role entails the isolation, optimisation and engineering of antibodies, antibody fragments and single domain antibodies for our therapeutic programmes using a range of in vitro display platforms (e.g. phage, mammalian, RNA and ribosome display) as well as supporting technology development and innovation programs within the Protein Engineering & Novel Modalities group in Biologics Engineering.
Essential for the role
A Ph.D level scientist with post-doctoral experience, or Batchelor's degree with equivalent experience in molecular biology, Protein Engineering or targeted delivery using biologics.
Strong hands-on experience in molecular biology methods and technologies (e.g., PCR, RT-PCR, cloning (ligation-dependent and independent methods), site-directed mutagenesis, Sanger sequencing/analysis), ideally applied to generation of antibody fragment (or other protein scaffold) libraries.
Extensive experience of antibody and/or antibody fragment (scFv, VH, VHH, or other small format binders) hit identification and engineering using display technologies such as phage, RNA, mammalian display - library generation and bio-panning using different enrichment strategies.
Experience of using biologics to deliver to specific cell types or tissues including engineering biologics for payload delivery.
Ability to optimize protocols, troubleshoot, interpret experimental results/data and maintain accurate, high quality and up-to-date experimental records.
An ability to learn new technologies quickly.
Desirable for the role
Experience working with scFV, VH, VHH, or other nanobody formats.
Experience in high-throughput antibody screening, reformatting and characterisation methods
Experience with computational methods and machine learning applied to protein design and optimisation
Experience with leading/co-leading and/or running research projects
