Public Health Service Lead – Behavioural Science 

Grade 6 - £49,498 - £61,269 Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review

About Us

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled individual to join our multi-disciplinary Public Health Division in a Service Lead role.  This is a rare opening to join the Public Health team within the largest unitary Local Authority in the country and lead work that contributes to Birmingham being a bold city.  The Public Health Division is engaged in a dynamic and diverse range of innovative work at a local, regional, national and international level. 

About the Role

We are looking for a Behavioural science specialist who will apply a high level of knowledge and skill to lead and make Birmingham City Council a leader in using Behavioural sciences across the wider Public Health Team. This new role will provide leadership and programme management of Behavioural science of the Behavioural Science Team, across the Division and into wider Behavioural Science and into the wider health and care system. Of particular significance is a culturally competent approach to Behavioural science.  The post holder will help us, and our residents thrive and be safer, healthier, and more sustainable. The post holder will undertake and deliver the specialist / technical elements of embedding Behavioural science on a range of organisation wide projects which could include supporting the refresh in our approach to maximizing NHS health checks programme, supporting approaches to maximum benefit uptake to address cost of living and support our Bolder Healthier Champion programme.

This full-time position will be within the Deputy Director team focusing on our Behavioural Science agenda. Birmingham has a growing reputation on an international stage for its role in responding to health inequalities and improving the lives of its citizens. 

Skills & Experience

This is an ideal opportunity for somebody who:

  • has substantial experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in supporting Public Health outcomes, for example elected members and the commissioners and providers of health and care services.
  • is able to interact with the diverse communities of Birmingham and is passionate about reducing health inequalities.
  • has experience of delivering performance and governance arrangements and developing and implementing improvement programmes in line with agreed priorities.
  • understands the role that the health and wellbeing board and its sub-Forums can play to improve health and wellbeing.
  • has demonstrable knowledge and understanding of Public Health priorities and Behavioural science policy environment.
  • has substantial experience of developing and coordinating the delivery of major projects in complex and challenging environments; and
  • has experience in developing staff through both formal and informal opportunities.
