Job description

The High School of Dundee is seeking to appoint effective March 2024 a qualified, enthusiastic and effective Teacher of Mathematics.  The successful candidate will be part of a friendly, committed and high-performing department.  This opportunity would suit an experienced teacher looking for a new challenge or a newly qualified teacher. The post is fixed term and hours can be varied to suit the successful candidate. The Mathematics Department has is a thriving and successful department, with a large number of pupils opting to study these subjects at university level. The department currently comprise of a total of eight members of staff.The department is based in the Main Building.  Each member of staff has their own classroom. Each classroom is very well equipped with a PC, SmartBoards, visualiser and full audio-visual facilities. There is good storage space and there are display areas in all classrooms. All pupils have individual iPads, which are used in Learning & Teaching.Mathematics is compulsory for all pupils from Form 1 to Form 4 and pupils are set by ability.  Pupils follow a varied and integrated course and are currently presented for National 5 in Form 4 and Higher in Form 5 and Form 6.  A choice of three Advanced Highers are offered in Form 6.The successful applicant will be expected to teach a range of classes from Form 1 to Form 6 including the preparation of pupils for SQA courses and to contribute to the curriculum development.Key Outputs & Responsibilities:The main features of the remit include:•      The teaching of Mathematics•      Being prepared to develop new curriculum programmes•      Supporting the Head of Department in curriculum change•      Preparation of pupils for internal and external examinations•      Closely monitoring pupil progression•      Ensuring that pupils receive high-quality feedback and have a clear understanding of their progress in learning and what they need to do to improve. •      Pupil discipline within the department•      Meeting with parents and colleagues as required•      Being a strong voice for the place of Mathematics and numeracy in the curriculum All teaching staff at the High School are expected to contribute to the co-curricular programme and participate in whole school events and the broader life of the school.  Person SpecificationCandidates should have a degree or equivalent in a related subject and be registered with the GTC Scotland. They should also have experience of teaching Mathematics across all ages and stages and be able to demonstrate initiative, teacher leadership as well as a commitment to excellence.  The successful applicant should have a passion for the subject and a deep interest in how to deliver this in a meaningful and engaging way, as well as a drive, an enthusiasm and a dynamic approach to the profession. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to interact positively with pupils, parents, and colleagues.  A positive contribution to curricular development initiatives will be expected.  Candidates must also show evidence of Continuing Professional Development and be literate in ICT.The School requires all newly appointed staff to undertake a check with the Scottish Criminal Records Office in line with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (‘PVG’) Scheme.  Offers of employment are conditional upon satisfactory registration with the PVG Scheme.Please note we are unable to provide sponsorship for a work visa so candidates should ensure they already have or are able to obtain the right to work in the UK before applying. The job description is written as an indication of the nature and scope of duties and responsibilities. It is not intended as a fully descriptive or definitive list and jobholders will be expected to carry out other duties assigned which are appropriate to the role. About the High School of DundeeAt the High School of Dundee, our unique location in the heart of the city is a major strength, helping our pupils feel connected to the real world, creating fully rounded and grounded young people. The school currently  has over 900 pupils, from age 3-18, who divide their time between our main city centre campus  and our extensive sports facility, Mayfield. Our approach is built on a profound belief that if young people are valued, supported known, and engaged in their learning, they can achieve amazing things. We have a long track record of outstanding exam results, which we owe to our rigorous approach, expertise built up over many years and a genuine desire to see our pupils realise their potential.In our Primary School, the children work daily on the crucial building blocks of literacy and numeracy, but the focus is also on making learning fun, engaging and wide-ranging.  And in the Senior Years, choice is paramount.
