The Role & Key Responsibilities
The Surrey/Sussex Tactical Firearms Unit has projected vacancies for currently qualified Police Constable National Firearms Instructors to be based in the Firearms Training office at Gatwick Police Station. We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated person to support us in delivering firearms training across both Forces. The post holder will be required to deliver regular coached shooting sessions and tactical training in ARV skills to new and current students in the use of Police Firearms. The post holder will be responsible for the design and deliver of training that is safe, current and accredited to ensure our Officers remain competent in their operational roles.
The postholder will be required to plan, prepare, deliver and assess Firearms training for firearms officers within Operations Command to National Standards. There may also be a requirement to perform the role of the Police Range Safety Inspector and to carry out associated tasks where necessary.
Duties will include:-
  • The development and implementation of structured firearms and non-firearms training programmes to National Police Firearms Curriculum (NPFTC) Standards for Authorised Firearms Officers and Police staff.
  • Plan, Prepare and Deliver 'Dry & Live Fire' Firearms Training Event Packages to be undertaken on approved Police & Military Ranges, compliant with the NPFTC National Standards.
  • Plan, Prepare and Deliver Tactical Firearms Training to the Surrey/Sussex ARV role profile, compliant with the NPFTC National Standards.
  • Design and develop varied and fully NPFTC compliant, training events to ensure that weapon handling skills, safety procedures and shooting standards are developed and maintained.
  • Deliver required range and tactical training to new and current Firearms Officer's to ensure that firearms officers remain operationally accredited and deployable; identifying individual or group learning needs.
Support the identification, development and delivery of individual action plans creation as a result of identified training needs.
Skills & Experience
Essential
  • Be a qualified and accredited National Firearms Instructor (Police) and have been involved in the design, planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of Authorised Firearms Officers, in both tactical and range environments, within 12 months' of application.
  • To have a Training Qualification to Certificate in Teaching in AET level 3 or equivalent and have a good understanding of the NPFTC, the Authorised Professional Practice (APP) and the National Decision Model (NDM).
  • Have evidence of a strong aptitude for coaching and developing Firearms officers in both tactical and range environments.
  • Self-motivated with excellent communication skills, work well as part of a team and be able to demonstrate IT literacy in: MS Window based Outlook, MS Office, Word, PowerPoint and Excel applications.
  • Evidence of excellent skills in planning and organising at an individual and team level with the ability to take a holistic view of departmental needs and prioritise workload.
  • A proven record of successfully passing the National Police Instructor qualification shoot on recognised police handgun and carbine.
  • Be currently qualified and accredited in the ARV role profile, and able to meet medical and fitness standards.
Desirable
  • Have been operationally competent in any of the following Police roles, NPO, Rifle, MASTS officer, Firearms Tactical Advisor, Operational Firearms Commander.
  • Qualified to NEBOSH/IOSH Health & Safety standard
  • Qualified A1 Assessors Award or TAQA equivalent
  • Police Range Safety Inspector qualification through the College of Policing
  • Have experience of the Chronicle training management system.
Further Information
To apply to transfer to Surrey Police, you must:
  • Be a substantive officer (at appropriate rank) and not subject to a probationary period
  • Be a serving Police Officer in a Home Office Force
  • Pass the necessary vetting, occupational health and fitness checks; such checks will not be carried out until after a successful interview
  • Have no outstanding discipline, integrity or performance issues
  • Have resided in the UK for three years immediately prior to submitting your application, or be able to provide a certificate of good conduct from the relevant country
  • Have a full UK manual driving licence, with less than 6 penalty points
  • Not be a current or previous member of a proscribed terrorist organisation or group
  • Declare any business interest
  • Declare any membership or involvement with the reserve Forces
  • Not have tattoos which could cause offence
  • Not have any existing County Court Judgements (CCJs) outstanding against you or have registered bankrupt and not have been discharged for at least three years
