Why Work for us: Employee benefits (southampton.gov.uk)

Services for young people in Southampton are Good and the leadership is Outstanding, we are proud of Ofsted’s recent findings. Ofsted commended the young people’s hub as a fantastic place to do direct young with young people, the response to young people’s homelessness was described as effective with and evident desire to support families to stay together, our edge of care support was described creative and work in response to missing and exploitation was described as thorough.

Joining our Youth Justice Service is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing and innovative team committed to effectively managing children and young people subject to statutory Court Orders in both community and custodial settings, as well as through our diversionary and Prevention work.

Our Youth Justice Service has very close working arrangements with Young People’s social work teams and shares the same management structure. The way we work is really joined up and our young people benefit from this. We currently have 1 full time permanent position at grade 9 available for a qualified worker.

The young people of Southampton need someone who is passionate about improving the lives of young people, they need a champion to enable young people to succeed in learning and developing skills, someone how can build relationships and use this to motivate young people and someone who is kind, consistent and compassionate about each individual they work with.

You will be working in a challenging but supportive environment carrying a caseload of complex children either in the system or on the edges of the system. You will manage and conduct a range of assessments and reports and contribute to the planning and reviewing of cases across a broad variety of practice, from diversionary work to statutory court orders in both community and custodial settings. We’ll give you all the specialist training and development you need to deliver intervention and you will be working alongside experienced, committed, and enthusiastic staff, focused on child centred and trauma informed practice.  Other duties include court, including on a rota at Saturdays’, and office duty and representing the service in multi-agency forums.

The successful candidate will have experience of working with young people with complex backgrounds and challenging behaviour, but who are driven to improve the lives of the children they work with as well as victims of crimes.  It is a rewarding role, working with a team passionately advocating for children who often do not have a voice, and supporting them to create positive changes.

  • Experience of risk assessment, risk management and a clear focus on safeguarding young people and victims including trauma informed practice.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Experience of multi-agency working.

Our young people’s hub where you will be based has been designed by young people and is an amazing place to work with young people. It has a cool common room space, a music studio where “rapping” takes place and skills areas where young people can learn to be a barista, a nail technician or barber.
