Pay Range
$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level
$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Group Leader for the Advanced Development Group (ADG) in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED). The ADG is a multidisciplinary group of engineers, associates, and technicians responsible for the development of advanced instrumentation, communications, embedded control systems, and sensing systems used in field and experimental work. This position is funded by a small fraction of effort; the majority of the employee’s assignment will be through direct programmatic work on projects not covered by this listing, but within the scope of NSED’s primary customer base (Global Security (GS), Strategic Deterrence (SD), Security Organization (SO), and Physical and Life Sciences (PLS)). This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Division.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Provide technical leadership and administrative supervision to a multi-disciplinary team including engineers, associates, and technicians.
- Oversee and mentor the group's personnel, foster staff development, and participate in hiring activities.
- Collaborate with Principal Investigators (PIs) to identify workforce needs to assign and hire staff and to guide workload planning for group members to ensure completion of multiple projects.
- Prepare, collect, and participate in performance management assessments, NSED ranking and salary management, and provide periodic feedback as appropriate.
- Partner with the Engineering Directorate to support institutional initiatives that promote excellence within the engineering discipline and the highest standards in the Laboratory's engineering processes.
- Ensure group members understand and follow Laboratory and Directorate policies and procedures, are up to date on all training requirements while in compliance with all safety and security requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level
- Assist Principal Investigators (PIs) in identifying subject matter experts to provide technical guidance in the areas of Advanced Development and systems engineering and provide routine technical peer review of projects to ensure the highest quality of work.
- Provide strategic insight from missions to enhance LLNL capabilities and outcomes.
- Interface with ADG programmatic sponsors to communicate mission needs and build the portfolio of projects the ADG group support.
- Expand and promote the group's technical capabilities in its support of NNSA projects and other internal and external customers by providing mentorship and training.
- Contribute to Engineering design reviews, self-assessments and incident investigations by acting as a chairperson, panel member, or reviewer.
Qualifications
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Knowledge of electro-optics, embedded control systems or communications technologies.
- Leadership experience and interpersonal skills that will attract, motivate, and retain a high performing technical staff.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and interpret and convey Laboratory policies to employees.
- Ability to mentor and supervise other and manager sensitive personnel matters.
- Significant experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome setbacks, and defuse conflict.
- Experience with LLNL and Engineering administrative, engineering, and safety practices, policies, and procedures, and knowledge of laboratory programs and technology applications.
Additional qualifications, at the SEL.4 level
- Master’s degree or PhD in engineering, physical science, or related field.
- Expert knowledge and experience in advanced instrumentation, control systems, communications, or sensing systems.
- Experience in laboratory research and development and in leading Strategic Deterrence projects.
- Expert level communications with significant experience in interfacing and collaborating with program leaders of major LLNL programs and sponsors.

Security Clearance
This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. Please note that your current active Q or Top Secret clearance with DOE or another agency does not guarantee DOE SCI access approval; if you are denied access, you may be subject to reinvestigation of your existing Q or Top Secret Clearance.
