Pay Range
$172,140 - $265,188 Annually
$172,140 - $221,064 Annually for the SEL.3 level
$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level

Job Description
We have multiple openings for Autonomous Systems Group Leaderswho will collaborate with a group of scientists, engineers, and technicians focused on support for various Autonomous Systems and supporting elements including but not limited to; Uncrewed Aircraft Vehicle/System (UAV/UAS), Uncrewed Ground Vehicle (UGV), Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV), and Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). This work is presently centered on the Global Security Program, and support from this team is leveraged across the laboratory’s mission space. In this role, you will act as a liaison between the projects this team supports and Engineering, help identify personnel to support projects, and advise group members on technical career development. You will interact with group members, NSED Management, Engineering Management, and Program contacts. These positions are funded for a fraction of effort: the majority of the employee’s assignment needs to be through direct programmatic work in GS/E Program. These positions are in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will

• Provide technical leadership and administrative supervision to a multi-disciplinary team including engineers, associates, and technicians that are responsible for all aspects of autonomous system design, analysis, assembly, integration, and test.
• Oversee and mentor the group's personnel, foster staff development, and participate in hiring activities.
• Collaborate with Principal Investigators (PIs) to identify workforce needs to assign and hire staff to guide workload planning for group members to ensure completion of multiple projects.
• Prepare, collect, and participate in performance management assessments, NSED ranking and salary management, and provide periodic feedback as appropriate.
• Partner with the Engineering Directorate to support institutional initiatives that promote excellence within the engineering discipline and the highest standards in the Laboratory's engineering processes.
• Ensure group members understand and follow Laboratory and Directorate policies and procedures, are up to date on all training requirements while in compliance with all safety and security requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.4 level

• Assist Principal Investigators (PIs) in identifying subject matter experts to provide technical guidance in the areas of Autonomous Systems or systems engineering and to provide routine technical peer review of projects to ensure the highest quality of work.
• Expand and promote the group's technical capabilities in its support of NNSA projects and other internal and external customers by providing mentorship and training.
• Contribute to Engineering design reviews, self-assessments and incident investigations by acting as a chairperson, panel member, or reviewer.

Qualifications

• This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
• Leadership experience and interpersonal skills that will attract, motivate, and retain a high performing technical staff.
• Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and interpret and convey Laboratory policies to employees.
• Ability to mentor and supervise others and manage sensitive personnel matters.
• Significant experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome setbacks, and defuse conflict.
• Experience with LLNL and Engineering administrative, engineering, and safety practices, policies, and procedures, and knowledge of laboratory programs and technology applications.
• Knowledge of Autonomous Systems, control systems, and sensor payloads.

Additional qualifications at the SEL.4 level

• Master’s degree or PhD in engineering, physical science, or related field.
• Expert knowledge of autonomous system design and analysis, electrical or mechanical subsystem design, or integration and operation of Autonomous Systems.
• Experience in laboratory research and development and in leading Global Security projects.
• Expert level communications with significant experience in interfacing and collaborating with program leaders of major LLNL programs and sponsors
