Main Duties

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Berridge Programs is seeking Artists in Residence to live and work at the chateau for 8 – 24 weeks mentoring and teaching gap year students in your artistic discipline through classes, workshops, hands-on projects, and mentored individual practice. We welcome artists from any country including the US, Canada, UK and Europe.

Start dates are Sept 26th, 2024 (8-week residency) and Jan 15th, 2025 (3–6-month residency). Room, board, travel to and from the program is included as well as a salary commensurate with experience. This fully residential position offers a unique opportunity to live in a creative community with fellow artists in Residence, practicing teaching artists, and young creatives. When not mentoring students, you will have the chance to work on your personal artistic practice and chaperone excursions throughout Normandy and Paris.

Artists in Residences will also receive time off between programs to travel. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for mentoring young artists, a strong personal artistic practice, confidence in traveling and living abroad, and an interest in residential community living. Key Responsibilities:

• Attend a 2-week mentor training program to develop your teaching skills
• Continue to develop your artistic practice on site (live/work space provided)
• Mentor and teach gap year students in your discipline through classes, workshops, hands-on projects and mentored individual practice
• Contribute to the running of our community
• Lead excursions including day-long trip and a week in Paris

Our programs offer pared-down approaches with simple tools and kit that can be used while travelling and exploring. We are seeking artists who are excited about grassroots approaches, working outside the studio, collaborative work and creating things that connect with culture, community and nature.

Skills and Experience Required

Required Qualifications:

• Graduate degree in Studio Art, Photography, Film or Writing
• Have an active creative practice, currently we are prioritizing visual artists with experience in Painting, Drawing, Photography and/or Film
• A multi-disciplinary artist is a plus, ability to teach multiple art forms
• Strong background or interest in plien air painting, creative journalling, illustration, photojournalism, documentary filmmaking, collaborative/community art projects, art/design history

Desired Skills/Experience:

• Knowledge of French culture, and customs or willingness to learn
• Be an excellent and respectful community member
• French speaker or some French language a plus
• Confidence in traveling abroad independently
• Demonstrated proficiency in intercultural communication and navigating culturally
• sensitive travel situationsAbility to mentor young adults as a positive role model and practicing artist
• Passion for mentoring young artists aged 18-22
• Patient and compassionate in student interactions
• Outgoing and positive
• Flexible in a dynamic, fast-moving environment.

• Confidence planning and leading mentorship sessions
• Teaching or mentoring experience is a plus
• Ability to drive a 9-passenger van is a plus (stick shift)
