Job Summary / Main Purpose
For each of the following, the post holder will:
Relationships
-Facilitate workflows within the NIPHL team, ensuring good lines of communication for smooth delivery of service through teamwork in laboratory processes and procedures.
-Liaise with the section head in relation to daily workload. After appropriate training and competency assessment, process samples for microbiological examinations, using automated equipment where applicable.
-Rotate through sections of the Public Health Laboratory, as directed by the Laboratory Technical Manager.
Technical Duties
-General sample reception duties, including booking-in and logging samples; as well as their labelling, sorting, storage and retrieval.
-Receipt, delivery and storage of goods where appropriate.
-Maintain a clean and efficient working area.
-Prepare appropriate solutions, supplements and microbiological media, as appropriate.
-Remove and dispose of laboratory waste according to NIPHL and Trust procedures.
After appropriate training and competency testing, prepare samples for microbiological examination using analysers/instruments in the various sections. On completion of analysis, present the results/data for verification and authorisation to the relevant senior Medical Technical Officer or Biomedical Scientist staff.
Essential Criteria
2 GCSEs (Grades A-C /9-4) in Maths and English or equivalent PLUS 2 year’s relevant laboratory experience.
OR
4 GCSE’s (Grades A-C/ 9-4) including Maths and English or equivalent PLUS 1 year’s relevant laboratory experience.
OR
NVQ level 3 or equivalent qualification in a science related subject.
