The National Institute for Health Research Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre is a five-year programme that began in December 2022 with a vision to connect patients, communities, clinicians, nurses, scientists and clinical trials specialists in order to translate the latest scientific discoveries into new and improved personalised treatments that will benefit our patients and invigorate our local economy through partnerships with industry.
The programme supports experimental research across a number of areas; Inflammatory Arthritis, Infection & Acute Care, Inflammatory Liver disease, Women's Metabolic Health, Cancer Inflammation, Oral, Intestinal & Systemic Health, Thrombo-inflammation, Sarcopenia & Multimorbidity, Data, Diagnostics & Decision tools, Patient-Reported Outcomes and Next Generation technologies.
The post holder will work across all of the UHB research delivery teams to support, accurately record and monitor all clinical research studies and the research study pipeline. The post holder will work across all hospital sites at UHB and with other trust partners linked to the BRC, to ensure the smooth delivery of clinical studies within the programme. The post holder will also support other ongoing work streams within the Research and Development unit as required.
Main duties, tasks & skills required
- Provide day-to-day operational support to the Leads of the Research Team, and the research team, and to ensure the delivery of effective clerical and administrative support.
- Develop and maintain an activity database of ongoing research studies and patient activity. Analyse the data collected.
- Monitor progress of all commercial and in-house trials/research projects to ensure good recruitment, compliance with the protocol and the quality and timeliness of data collection.
- Develop the design, conduct, publication and presentation of research findings/research updates through oral, poster and written formats as well as lecture on relevant courses.
- Work with the clinical delivery teams across the BRC partnership and specialities linked to the BRC research themes to manage resource requirement in order to effectively deliver the BRC portfolio. Support the management of the delegated delivery team budget across the programme
- Lead on specific issues and prepare / deliver presentations as required.
- Obtain appropriate regulatory and approval for individual studies including preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the running of clinical trials.
- Responsible for developing trial protocols, identify and apply for bids/funding/grants, set up and monitor research budgets.

Qualifications
Essential
- Degree or equivalent professional qualification, management qualification (e.g. DMS, DipHSM, etc.) plus acquired training to masters level or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of own area of expertise acquired through degree or equivalent experience and training plus further management knowledge to post-graduate diploma level
- Experience of further academic/personal development
- Understanding of range of work practices, majority non-routine with intermediate level of theoretical knowledge i.e. good understanding of the R&D processes
- In-depth understanding of clinical research and trial management methodology, including applicable regulatory requirements
- Sound understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the EU clinical trials directive
