Job summary

The Sexual Health and HIV Research Team at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Band 7Research Fellow. The post-holder will report to the Sexual Health and HIV Research Manager and be part of a well-supported team at the Institute of Translational Medicine and Whittall Street Clinic in the Umbrella Sexual Health Services. UHB works in partnership with the University of Birmingham and other universities to improve the delivery of high-quality sexual and reproductive healthcare through:

  • a program of health care services research
  • contributing to the research and teaching programmes
  • supporting the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network

Our previous partners have included the Birmingham City Council, Aston University, Warwick University, University of Nottingham, Glasgow Caledonian University, Public Health England, Sanger Institute, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, and the Sexually Transmitted Infections Research Foundation Charity. The research team is based within the Umbrella Sexual Health partnership which is led by UHB. This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week, 12 month fixed term post. Candidates are highly recommended to call to discuss further. This is an excellent development opportunity for someone who wishes to pursue a career in research in the NHS. A clinical background is not required for this post.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the duties outlined below:

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with the assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops a new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research-related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to department research-related activities and research-related administration

- Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the Trust- Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews

  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

- Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Qualifications

Essential

  • Post graduate Diploma in relevant subject/ field (e.g. Sexual Health) Or a research based qualification to post graduate or Masters level / or equivalent Level 7 post graduate qualification
  • Experience of further academic/personal development

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of project work
  • Experience in presenting information to groups of staff face to face / virtually or at meetings
  • Evidence of dissemination of research and application of research in practice
  • Evidence of previous research delivery experience e.g. data collection, analysis and reporting
  • Knowledge and understanding of the research process.
  • Good understanding of IT and its application.
  • Evidence of planning and organising complex activities which require formulation, adjustment and coordination with other professionals within the organisation, capacity planning, facilitating collaborative working.
  • Experience of being a mentor
  • Experience in learning from incidents /complaints and supporting changes in practice.
  • Demonstrate an ability and/ experience in the following areas:

o Leadership

o Team building

o Managing Resources

o Time management

o Role modelling

o Change management/ clinical developments

o Clinical governance

o Audit and research

o Workforce planning / management

o NHS policy and political awareness
