Grade: 7

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to April 2025

Closing date: 3rd April 2024

Background

The post-holder will work on the IDSV study; an 18 month NIHR award led by Dr Louise Jackson and Prof Jonathan Ross. The post-holder will be based in the Health Economics Unit in the Institute of Applied Health Research, College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

The IDSV study aims to assess what outcome measures are most appropriate for research focussed on improving NHS care for those who have experienced sexual violence and establish best practice for partnership working in this area to ensure survivor and public voices are heard effectively. This project will analyse the existing evidence for which outcomes are most important in assessing interventions that respond to sexual violence and examine the factors that survivors, service users, the public and other stakeholders consider important in relation to outcome measures in this area.

The post-holder will be one of a team of researchers working in this and related areas, with specific responsibility for undertaking a systematic review of relevant policy documents and evidence, and undertaking qualitative interviews with survivors, service users, the public and other stakeholders. They will develop relationships with community groups, third sector organisations, healthcare organisations, clinical and non-clinical staff and policy-makers, conduct in-depth primary and secondary research, and play an important role in ensuring the programme delivers research advances.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career researcher to be involved in delivering an innovative NIHR-funded grant on appropriate health outcome measures for those who have experienced sexual violence. It offers the post-holder the chance to apply (and further develop) qualitative and policy research skills in an environment where they will be well-supported with training and development opportunities.

Role Summary

The role will contribute to a range of work packages within the IDSV study, in particular they will investigate and synthesise existing published evidence and guidance on health outcome measurement, and also undertake qualitative interviews with survivors, service users, the public and other stakeholders to obtain their views and experiences. This role comprises:

  • Undertaking all aspects of the research, including planning, study design, data collection, data analysis, and presentation;
  • Undertaking supervision, administration, management and communication for the wider IDSV study;
  • Contributing to teaching and research in the wider Institute.

  • Collect research data including using in-depth qualitative interviews and also through literature reviews, document analysis etc.;
  • Analyse and interpret data, applying knowledge in a way that develops new intellectual understanding;
  • Disseminate research findings orally and in written form for publication, conferences, research seminars etc;
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students and support staff as required;
  • Undertake management/administration tasks related to the IDSV project, such as securing ethical approval and running workshops;
  • Contribute to the wider research environment in the Institute;
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods;
  • Support the IARH teaching programmes, particularly in relation to the Masters programme in Health Economics & Health Policy and MPH.

Person Specification

  • PhD (or near to completion) or equivalent experience in a social science, health-related, or policy discipline;
  • A record of research output, appropriate to career stage, with potential to publish in leading international journals;
  • Interest in health, health services, economics, and public policy;
  • An aptitude to apply techniques relevant to the work package (qualitative interviews, focus groups, document analysis);
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly;
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Experience of developing new research ideas, with an aptitude for developing new models and methodologies that will advance discipline;
