Job description


The post is that of a Clinical Fellow in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), to support the gastroenterology service in the care of the IBD patient population and develop the service.
This 36 month post offers the opportunity to undertake research (a PhD) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) under the supervision of Dr. Horace Williams and Dr. Lucy Hicks. There will be three clinical sessions per week. The successful candidate will participate in the gastrointestinal bleed rota (banded).
Candidates will need to be motivated to undertake research in IBD, and will be independent at diagnostic gastroscopy. They will have experience of managing IBD in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They will attend a training endoscopy list, provide a service endoscopy list and attend outpatient IBD clinics. On an ad hoc and infrequent basis, they may be required to cover General (Internal) Medicine shifts. Candidates will provide advice to the specialist IBD Nursing team about patients, and action any relevant patient results.

Horace Williams and Lucy Hicks. There will be three clinical sessions per week (endoscopy/outpatient clinics). The successful candidate will cover ad hoc General (Internal) Medicine shifts (no more than 1 in 25) and will participate in the gastrointestinal bleed rota (banded). Candidates will need to be motivated to undertake research in IBD, and will be independent at diagnostic gastroscopy. They will have experience of managing IBD in an in- and out-patient setting. The post-holder may be asked to provide planned or (potentially) short notice cover for on-call shifts, clinics or endoscopy lists, however this is rare. Working in a team of registrars, the post-holder may be required to look after Gastroenterology in-patients, participate in ward rounds and out-patient clinics as per the needs of the service
They will have the opportunity to attend a training endoscopy list, and provide a service endoscopy list. They will attend IBD clinics and general gastroenterology clinics and help co-ordinate the IBD flare service. On an ad hoc and infrequent basis, they may be required to cover General (Internal) Medicine shifts but this is very rare.

The Department is closely integrated with the Department of Hepatology at St Mary’s Hospital and the Department of Pancreatic/Biliary Surgery at the Hammersmith. The Gastroenterology service has close links to the upper gastrointestinal surgery and HPB surgery, which are based at the Hammersmith Hospital; and to the colorectal service based at Charing Cross. It is extremely well supported by the Histopathology and Radiology departments. There are also close links with the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Bariatric service.
The appointed candidate will help manage patients with acute and chronic gastrointestinal disease (such as inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal haemorrhage, gastrointestinal infection and cancer, motility and functional disorders) along with patients with general medical problems.
They will participate in the acute medical take (including night shifts) and in the ongoing care of patients admitted via the take until their discharge or triage to a different medical team. They will provide out-of-hours ward cover on an on-call rota. They will be expected to take an active role in education, audit and research. Admission rates to Medicine from the Emergency Department can vary quite significantly with the seasons. The post holder is expected to support consultant lead care to all patients managed by the Acute Medicine team regardless of their location.
