Are you someone who can lead and manage change in a challenging and dynamic environment? Do you want a role safeguarding standards of animal and plant health and welfare? Then we would be interested in hearing from you.
As a senior scientist in the Influenza and avian virology team, you will lead data management activities, driving cutting edge diagnostic responses in a data acquisition and analysis environment. This will involve horizon scanning for novel approaches to both data acquisition, analysis and translation across both national and international for a including both laboratory and computer-based activities. This role will also include supporting strategic direction and delivery for the maintenance of funding streams at APHA including towards ensuring cross-sectorial development of tools to improve diagnostic and research activities.
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. Our diverse teams of over 3,000 skilled and committed professionals come together to provide research, advice, and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for benefit of the environment and economy.
Key areas of work will include:
- Cross-sectorial leadership, impacting across the Influenza and avian virology team, assisting the senior management team lead in implementing a data revolution within avian notifiable disease diagnostics and research alongside wider virological activities
- Leading engagement within different Data Science fora (e.g., wider interaction across veterinary/human and industrial sectors) to enable APHA representation across a diverse spectrum of activities relevant to rapid data analysis and research around both viral and host factors linked to genomic assessment
- Developing the strategic programmes of research linked to genomic data analysis across the workgroup including both fundamental and applied strands of scientific research with linkages across APHA as necessary
- Drive a technological evolution of laboratory activities as a precursor to downstream computational analyses for both viral and host genetic analysis
- Developing and enhancing links with strategic collaborators at universities, government agencies and industrial partners both nationally and internationally, contributing towards complex decision making on the application and direction of our science
- Preparation and review of grant proposals to ensure continuous funding across workgroup and both direct and functional management of staff
