Job description

IPPR is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community, and from applicants with a range of professional and lived experiences. As an organisation engaging in critical debate about a wide range of progressive policy issues, we value the creativity and range of perspectives that a diverse team can provide.

Director of IPPR Scotland
£70,092 - £86,544 per annum plus benefits, or appointment on Associate Director pay scale of £57,802 - £71,403 per annum plus benefits depending on experience and skills
Permanent, 22.5 – 37.5 hrs per week
Based in Edinburgh, hybrid working available

IPPR Scotland, created in 2015, shapes public policy in pursuit of a fairer, greener, more prosperous Scotland. Through policy, research, and communications, we work to create tangible progressive change, and turn bold ideas into common sense realities.

We are currently looking for IPPR Scotland’s next director, to build on the significant impact and policy change that our rigorous research and creative policy proposals have achieved to date. This is a vitally important role for both our organisation and for public life in Scotland; the new postholder will be taking on an influential role at the heart of Scottish policy.

We know that applicants will bring very different skills and levels of experience – and we’re as interested in where you’re going, as where you’ve been. This role is being advertised at IPPR’s Director level, but with the possibility of appointment on an Associate Director payscale, with adjusted levels of responsibility set out in the job description.

The successful candidate will set the strategic direction of IPPR Scotland, be IPPR Scotland’s figurehead, as well as lead and oversee our research outputs, events, influencing and media profile. If appointed at Director level, you will have a key role across the Institute as a member of IPPR’s senior management team.

At both levels, the successful postholder will combine strong political judgement with the ability to develop creative policy proposals and impact strategies. You will be able to inspire and support a team to deliver high-quality research, and build relationships at the highest levels of government, politics, business, the voluntary sector, and in the media. You will be impact focussed and build partnerships to achieve change. In addition, you will work with the team and senior management team to secure funding that aligns with our strategy.
IPPR Scotland is part of the IPPR family across the UK, alongside IPPR North based in Manchester and the IPPR team in London. We are a charity, cross-party and neutral on the question of Scotland’s independence – but not on the question of Scotland’s future.

We recognise you may have family commitments or other roles you’d want to continue alongside this one. As part of our commitment to flexible working we will consider a range of options for the successful applicant to fill the post, including secondment, job-share and part-time working. All options can be discussed at interview stage.

Before applying, please click on the document to your left to read the information pack that includes the job description and person specification. Or emailrecruitment@ ippr.orgquotingthe job title or REF: DSCOT/FEB.

Please provide a CV with a 2-page personal statement. The statement should address the attributes in the person specification, and why you are applying for the role. You should specify if you are applying for the post on the basis of the Director or Associate Director payscales.

The CV and statement should be combined into one PDF document and returned to applications@ ippr.org.  In order to complete your application please also complete IPPR’sdiversity monitoring form.

Closing date for receipt of completed applications is midnight on 6th March 2024.

There will be two rounds of interviews, the initial interviews are planned on 20th & 21st March 2024.
