Head of Finance
Our Head of Finance is retiring so we are looking for a replacement Head of Finance to continue to provide a comprehensive financial service to the team and to provide accurate financial reports and forecasts.
As our Head of Finance, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the charity complies with all legal requirements and reporting whilst developing and implementing finance strategy in line with the business plan. You’ll co-ordinate the annual budget setting processes in close collaboration with managers and the Chief Executive to ensure the budget is realistic and workable and there are sufficient financial resources to meet obligations and adhere to our reserves policy.
From a day-to-day perspective, you will be responsible for managing and co-ordinating the work of the finance team, managing the charity’s bank accounts, liaising with managers and our accountants to ensure salaries are paid correctly and on time, maintaining the charity’s insurance schedule and payments, undertaking regular reviews of financial functions, and making recommendations for continuous improvements.
Regular reporting in this role includes producing annual accounts and co-ordinating the successful independent auditing of these, ensure detailed management accounts and financial metrics are presented to the senior management team and Board of Trustees and submitting accounts, reports and all other requested relevant information to the Charities Commission, OSCR, Companies House, ENTRUST and other regulators on time.
Head of Finance Requirements
• We’re looking for a credible professional who can demonstrate maturity and be a source of knowledge and experience, a candidate who can work independently, but also collaboratively as required, with the ability to adapt to different styles and not be afraid to challenge where needed.
• SMT experience of organisational finances including managing finance/ budget processes and producing annual accounts
• Thorough understanding of the full range of services provided by a small finance team with the ability to be flexible and adaptable to ensure delivery of a comprehensive service.
• Knowledgeable and demonstrable best practice in legal requirements, financial management and accounting
• Standard operational management practices and processes, including budget setting and monitoring, project planning and staff management
• Commonly used IT software programmes, particularly accounting software (preferably including SAGE)
• Trustworthy, able to maintain confidentiality, deal with sensitive information and to take responsibility for important operational functions
• Strong planning and organising skills, able to produce budgets and financial strategies
• Ability to review, devise and implement new systems and procedures
• Operating bank accounts and managing Direct Debits
• Knowledge and understanding of charity fundraising, project management and SORP would be an advantage alongside an interest in and some knowledge of the current issues in conservation in the UK and globally
We would prefer candidates to hold a relevant professional qualification, e.g., ACCA, ACA or MBA and membership of an appropriate professional body such as ACMA or FCMA.

This role is being offered on a permanent part time basis of 28 hours per week. We would prefer the successful candidate to work from one of our offices either in Peterborough, Plymouth, Stirling or Cardiff, but we are flexible on location and the option for days worked from home. Working days (one of which must be a Tuesday) and days in the office will be determined to co-ordinate with other team members.
