About the role
Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House Whitehall, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace, and Hillsborough Castle. We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built. HRP is a charity and a commercial business, raising all its own funds, and depending on the support of visitors, members, donors, sponsors and volunteers. We have an extensive record of achievement in recent years and ambitious plans for the future at all our sites.
With a 1,000-year-old history - as a palace, fortress, prison and even a zoo - and attracting nearly three million visitors each year, the Tower of London is the crown jewel of HRP. The site and the post are steeped in history and tradition. HRP is launching a new strategy in which it aims to become a charity for everyone. The implications for the Tower are significant and over the next 10 years will lead to a transformation of the site so it remains current and relevant - this includes reaching a wider audience, helping them explore on their own terms, and acting for the future through listening to young people, stewarding assets for the long-term and making a positive impact on the planet.
About you
Reporting to the Tower Director (Governor), we seek to appoint a new Head of Operations, also known as the Deputy Governor, to lead the day-to-day operations, including the delivery of outstanding customer service and seamless onsite visitor experience, and the security of visitors, staff, buildings and objects, particularly the Crown Jewels. The post holder will work closely with colleagues at the Tower and across the Historic Royal Palaces Group to ensure consistent operational excellence across HRP.
Successful candidates will have experience in delivering complex public-facing operations that engage a diverse range of audiences and visitors. Bringing a track record of successful leadership of change, a commitment to the continuous improvement of culture and process, and experience in planning and delivery, the Head of Operations will also play a key role in promoting an inclusive culture for all visitors and staff. The successful candidate will most likely have a background in the British Armed Forces - the level of experience sought would normally be possessed by those who have reached the rank of Colonel or Lieutenant Colonel (or equivalent), or who have gained the relevant experience following their military Service.
The successful candidate will be required to live at the Tower of London and join the Duty Governor roster. They will undertake responsibilities on a shared rota basis and will be expected to work some evenings and weekends (approximately one weekend in 5)
