Job description


A Higher BioMedical Assistant (BMA) works as part of the technical team, supervised by experienced Biomedical Scientists and managed by the Laboratory Team Leaders and Operational Head of Department.
Once trained a BMA is required to assist the Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners.
Supervises and/or train less experienced staff in own area of work.
The post holder will be required to work on sites as appropriate for the delivery of the service and may be asked to work across sites within the trust.
The post holder will be required to support a 24/7 service.
KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Under the direction of team leaders, Biomedical Scientist and Associate Practitioner staff.
Communication will be required with all professional, medical, and nursing groups within the hospital trust and externally e.g., General Practitioners.
KEY RESULT AREAS
To participate in the routine work of the laboratory in accordance with laboratory procedure in an efficient, cost effective and safe manner.
To carry out, under supervision by qualified staff, routine tasks in the laboratory which do not require the interpretive skills or training to become a Registered Biomedical Scientist.
To rotate between all the sections of the laboratory as required.
To assist in the provision of a microbiological service that is of high quality and cost effective for clinical, environmental, research and training purposes.

To help maintain the accreditation requirements of UKAS as appropriate.

Clinical / Scientific / Technical
• To carry out, under supervision by qualified staff, routine tasks in the laboratory which do not require the interpretive skills or training to become a Registered Biomedical Scientist.
• Follow departmental polices/procedures.
• Upon completion of training and competent of an activity. Supervise and train new or less experienced staff.
• To rotate between the sections of the laboratory as required
• To assist in the provision of a microbiological service that is of high quality and cost effective for clinical, environmental, research and training purposes.
• Use own judgment for day-to-day issues, using straight forward facts or situations requiring some analysis. e.g., Mislabeled, or lost specimens.
• Perform other technical duties as required within post-holder’s training and competence.
• Preform and ensuring that acceptance testing, and associated documentation is complete and filed correctly.
• Supervision of ordering, delivery of consumables and equipment from outside suppliers. Including, testing (acceptance testing) of applicable goods received in the laboratory from outside suppliers. (Including trouble shooting).
• Responsibility for/and training associated with use of laboratory autoclaves waste disposal/management.
• To perform any other duties required by the Operational Head of Department commensurate with grade.
• Training relevant to this post, including safety aspects in the handling of microbiological material, will be given.
• Once trained, competency is expected be maintained at all times in the following areas –
Physical skill obtained through practice, Accuracy, manipulation of fine tools and material: hand eye co-ordination, speed and accuracy required e.g., when inoculating samples, and accurate pipetting.
The list of specific duties providing basic clinical technical and clinical services, as described by the Departments General Manager or deputies will include but not limited to:
• Registration of patient / sample data
• Take telephone enquiries (relaying test results to clinicians) and perform other clerical duties.
• ‘Making safe’ and disposal of laboratory waste
• Washing up of glassware and other consumables
• Receipt, sorting and numbering of specimens
• Preparing specimens for diagnostic testing.
• Separating serum specimens
• Setting up microbiological cultures
• Packaging specimens for reference laboratories
• Preparation of media / reagents / stains
• Recycling of laboratory consumables and kit preparation
• Ordering, Receipt, and distribution of laboratory stock.
• Distribution and collection of specimens, media, and equipment
• Sorting, copying, and posting reports.
• Careful use of laboratory equipment.
• Cleaning laboratory equipment including analysers.
• Maintain stock levels / ordering supplies.
• Entry of laboratory test results.
• Loading/unloading analysers or equipment in-line with SOP’s.
• Performance of quality/safety audits.
