Job description

  • Full time, permanent
  • Salary: £32,000-37,000, depending on experience
  • Hybrid working potential, based in Central London
  • Closing date: 27 May 2024

Thames & Hudson is the leading publisher of illustrated books on visual arts, history, fashion and popular culture, and includes titles published in association with brands, institutions and museums worldwide.

This is an exciting stage to join us at Thames & Hudson: we are focused on enhancing the working culture and you could be a part of this. We are looking for an experienced HR professional with an appreciation for working in a creative environment and a desire for constant improvement. There’s scope to get involved in building systems and policies, as well as developing your own skills. This position will assume responsibility for the reporting of our monthly payroll, so previous experience and enjoyment of this aspect will be crucial. You will also take ownership of our HRIS and its untapped benefits. We have around 160 employees and this role sits with another HR Advisor, reporting to the Head of HR. We are also happy to consider someone with less experience who will initially start as a Coordinator and grow into an HR Advisor.

The Role

-       Working with the Payroll Officer and the finance department to ensure that all T&H staff are paid correctly, including our international employees

-       Overseeing the administration of our various benefits schemes and pensions, including advising staff about their options and entitlements

-       Leading on our annual payroll processes and statutory requirements

-       Administering and maintaining our HR System, Staffology

-       Maintaining HR files and records, ensuring an audit trail for HR processes

-       Providing best practice advice about recruitment to managers and Heads of Department, working alongside the Administrative Assistant to ensure an effective and responsive flow, constantly seeking the best candidates

-       Producing letters as required: reference letters, contract changes and preparing contracts

-       Ensuring T&H is compliant with all relevant immigration and employment legislation

-       Monitoring probation periods, appraisal timetables and fixed-term contracts

-       Planning for new starters, and undertaking welcoming inductions

-       Conducting exit interviews

-       Assisting with staff welfare and counselling as required

-       Maintaining holiday entitlement and take-up, as well as absence recording and processing

-       Assisting with employee relations where required, attending grievance and disciplinary meetings as needed and taking notes

-       Assisting the Head of HR with any other projects

Skills, experience and attributes:

Our ideal candidate will be passionate about the positive contribution HR can make to our working lives, coupled with a firm understanding of best-practice and employment legislation. You will be our payroll expert, with a desire to learn more about all aspects of a generalist HR role.

-       Solid experience of leading the monthly payroll processing

-       Experience of delivering HR advice in a similar-sized company

-       HR and Payroll systems experience

-       Numerate and commercially minded

-       Accurate, with great attention to detail

-       Highly organised and efficient, with the ability to multi-task and prioritise appropriately

-       Excellent written and verbal communications skills

-       Working knowledge of administering pension schemes

-       Strong computer skills - primarily Word and Excel

-       CIPD qualified or working towards qualification

-       Responsible, discreet and trustworthy; diplomatic, enthusiastic and professional

-       Proactive, adaptable and self-motivated

Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK.

At Thames & Hudson, we believe that employing a diverse workforce is essential to succeed and selection decisions are based on applicants’ experience and skills. We welcome applications from everyone, irrespective of age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, race, religion or belief.
