This role exists to build and protect the reputation, and support the commercial and corporate objectives, of BT Group’s Consumer business which is home to the EE, BT, and Plusnet brands. The role holder will lead on issues management across all three brands as well as managing a press office programme for EE.

You will reach a wide variety of external stakeholders across multiple channels from business and consumer national media to lifestyle press, industry analysts, online communities, and social media.
What you’ll be doing

  • Leading Press Office management – you will be responsible for the day-to-day management the Consumer Corporate Affairs press office covering EE, BT and Plusnet. Leading the reactive press office function for all three consumer brands, the proactive campaign management for EE and managing two press office agencies.
  • Issues and crisis management – you will be a key member of our crisis management function, which occasionally also requires out-of-hours support and is responsible for assessing and responding to issues across all channels, working closely with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure seamless coordination.
  • Corporate communications – supporting the Principal External Comms, Consumer, you will be required to actively participate in the communications plans supporting our regulatory and policy agenda
  • Proactive campaign development and support – you will be responsible for leading proactive campaign development for EE designed to drive a steady drumbeat of coverage. These consumer campaigns include but aren’t limited to supporting our customer service initiatives as well as other ad hoc activities and announcements that support broader company objectives, from tactical short-term opportunities to long term campaigns.
  • Media relations – you will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with key journalists that influence reputation and perceptions across our brands with technology, consumer affairs, regulatory and personal finance press in trade, national and regional media. This includes meetings and exciting hospitality opportunities during and outside of normal working hours.
  • Counsel and advice – provide communications planning, and strategic business counsel to a range of internal stakeholders and establishing yourself as a trusted advisor to key internal contacts across our business up to Managing Director level.
  • Customer communications – whether for crisis communications or proactive customer messaging, the press office team has a critical role in reviewing and providing feedback on a wide range of customer communications.
  • Agency management – you will be responsible for managing our EE, BT and Plusnet press office agencies. Leading these agency teams to ensure that the press office is set up for success and that we are developing and delivering exciting and engaging creative campaigns that get cut through with our core audiences.
  • Team structure – you will have one direct report – Press Officer. You will be responsible for supporting their performance and development.
  • Monthly evaluation – you will be responsible for the month monitoring of press office activity and performance. This report will form part of the monthly Consumer Corporate Affairs CEO report.
The skills you'll need

  • Robust, calm under pressure, and persuasive – the ability to debate issues and clearly, calmly communicate to a range of audiences under pressure
  • Excellent writer, with experience writing reactive media statements, features, press releases and content for social media
  • Strategic thinker with ability to contribute to key decisions and advise others by interpreting internal and external influences and changes
  • Ability to manage and prioritise complex, competing communication issues – maintaining high standards and alignment with BT strategy at pace and with minimal guidance
  • Ability to constructively challenge and influence at senior levels
  • Logical, curious, detail-oriented and results driven – ability to analyse complicated situations and communicate them in a clear and understandable way
  • Empathetic – we want to treat our customers as we would like to be treated and will always go above and beyond wherever possible to help them

  • Excellent team/cross functional player with ability to assist in the development of media and business strategy
