The Joint Maritime Security Centre (JMSC) is the UK government’s centre of excellence for maritime security. Its mission is to increase awareness and understanding of maritime security threats and enable cross-government coordination to deliver a whole-system response to mitigate them. Utilising a staff drawn from across government, it can swiftly identify maritime security incidents and enable the effective coordination of the UK’s aerial and at-sea assets to respond – ensuring the safety and security of all those who use our seas. About the role
Do you have the insight and organisation to help coordinate for a team? The Home Office is hiring a Planning Support Officer to become part of the Joint Maritime Security Centre in Portsmouth.
The purpose of the Planner is to deliver both a planning role and general contribution within the JMSC Operations (Ops) environment, reporting to the Deputy Lead Planner. The Planner works as part of the JMSC Ops team that coordinates the cross-government response to maritime security incidents.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Taking responsibility for delivery and working with others to achieve planning function and covering the roles and responsibilities of any gapped positions within the planning function as requested by the Lead Planner / Operations Pillar leadership, where trained and confident to do so.
- Preparing and issuing the weekly JMSC asset disposition report.
- Supporting capability trials to ensure JMSC has access to cutting-edge technology.
- Supporting the production, planning and delivery of multi-agency exercises in response to maritime security threats, both in the form of tabletop and live exercises. This includes procurement.
- Tracking Operations pillar mandatory training to provide evidence of compliance.
- Providing secretariat and other support for the JMSC Stowaway Working Group.
- Being prepared to support wider JMSC activity, including across the other pillars, where the planning team has the capacity, and they are trained and confident to do so.
- Maintaining the capabilities grid in the UK/France Counter Terrorism Joint Intervention Plan.
- Supporting to cross Government planning activity. Contribute to formulating responses to maritime security issues and risks, ensuring the best asset utilisation.
- Utilising in-house systems to coordinate asset response.
About you
Candidates are expected to demonstrate and/or have experience of:
- A self-starter with an organised approach and the ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines.
- Working effectively and remain professional in a highly pressurised environment, with the ability to deal with changing situations and to act calmly under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with clarity, conviction, and enthusiasm orally and in writing.
- The professional behaviours and personal integrity associated with working alongside law enforcement organisations. This means acting ethically and with integrity, being able to take difficult decisions when they are needed, always doing the right thing, being impartial and honest.
- An ability to develop strong stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally, and build enduring partnerships.
- A good working knowledge of Microsoft Products.
- An objective and analytical approach to work. Able to gather information from several sources, make a reasoned recommendation or assessment, and justify this both verbally and in writing.
